Antarctica21 has recently inaugurated the Explorers House, a first-of-its-kind private club in Punta Arenas. It is designed exclusively for its fly-and-sail expedition guests in a remarkable fusion of history and modernity. This unique facility marks a new chapter in polar exploration, offering a luxurious and sustainable gateway to the Antarctic experience.
The Explorers House, situated in the heart of Punta Arenas’ historic centre, is a testament to Antarctic exploration’s evolving narrative. Initially serving as a wool processing warehouse in the early 20th century, the building has been meticulously transformed by prominent Chilean architect Pedro Kovacic and designer Enrique Concha. Their vision harmoniously integrates the spirit of Patagonian pioneers and Antarctic explorers with contemporary aesthetics.
Spanning over 21,500 square feet and retaining its original wooden framework, the building is now enveloped in a protective shell of insulated corrugated iron, a nod to its history and the rugged Antarctic environment. The fusion of warm materials and textures with turquoise-coloured floors reminiscent of Antarctic icebergs creates an atmosphere of relaxed sophistication.
Jaime Vásquez, Co-founder and President of Antarctica21 and a native of Chile’s Magallanes region, reflects on the transformation: “Explorers House is not just a structure; it’s a narrative of journeys, a convergence of histories and futures. Here, our guests don’t just start their Antarctic voyage; they become part of a story that spans continents and centuries.”
The Explorers House is more than a mere staging point for adventurers. It embodies the essence of Antarctica21’s commitment to providing unparalleled experiences. The facility offers guests a seamless transition from the urban charm of Punta Arenas to the stark beauty of the White Continent. It is an Antarctic-themed private club with amenities such as a restaurant offering regional Chilean cuisine, a well-stocked bar, a coffee station, and a state-of-the-art presentation space. Here, travellers can mingle, absorb the atmosphere, and prepare to journey to one of Earth’s most remote and untouched regions.
Sustainability sits at the heart of the Explorers House design. The building’s renovation emphasized reusing original materials, and many of the upholstery elements are crafted from recycled industrial fibres. A solar panel system generates electricity and heats the building through radiant floors, while harvested rainwater is utilized in the restrooms. These features underscore Antarctica21’s dedication to preserving the pristine environment they explore.
As a hub of activity during the austral summer, Punta Arenas becomes a bustling gateway for adventurers heading to Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, Cape Horn, and Antarctica. The introduction of Explorers House alleviates the strain on the city’s resources, offering Antarctica21 guests an exclusive space to convene. The facility can accommodate up to 250 people in its lounge space, with a theatre-style presentation area for 100 people, interactive touchscreens, a library of over 100 books, a gear and gift shop, a garden, and ample parking.
The launch of Explorers House signifies a pioneering step in polar travel. It enriches guests’ pre- and post-expedition experiences and elevates Punta Arenas’ status as a critical player in Antarctic exploration. This initiative by Antarctica21 blends the adventurous spirit of polar expeditions with the comforts of modern luxury and environmental stewardship.
