The U.S. tourism sector experienced a significant upswing in the third quarter of 2023, as the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) revealed in their latest Survey of International Air Travelers (SIAT) report. The figures present a vibrant image of the U.S. as a top global destination, with international air travellers contributing a staggering $20.9 billion to the U.S. economy, marking a 19.9% increase from last year.
The average overseas visitor injected $1,863 into the U.S. economy per trip, with their average household income pegged at $91,579. The United Kingdom emerged as the leading source of these travellers, followed closely by Germany, India, Japan, and France. Notably, the average overseas visitor planned their trip 109.2 days in advance and predominantly favoured vacationing, with shopping and sightseeing as the primary activities.
Canadian visitors, boasting an average household income of $122,769, spent an average of $999 per trip. Their favourite destinations included California and Florida, with a predominant focus on shopping and experiencing fine dining—Canadian tourists aligning with their overseas counterparts preferred hotels and motels for accommodation.
Mexican visitors, with an average household income of $61,175, showed an impressive 58.5% increase in their spending in the U.S., averaging $1,541 per visit. Texas and California were the most visited states by Mexican nationals, who broadly travelled for vacations and engaged in shopping and sightseeing.
