The Portillo International Music Academy and Festival, otherwise known as PortilloFest (13–23 January), is getting set for its strongest Australian presence yet in 2024.

As an established 10-day immersive music experience, PortilloFest combines eight days of masterclasses with teachers from around the world combined with concerts, theatre, poetry, wine tastings, hiking in the Andes, star gazing and culminating in a gala dinner. The carefully curated selection of artistic offeringsisset to appeal to both devoted music lovers, as well as bring classical music to the masses.

Caroline Ward is an Australian native who has been at the forefront of the event since its inception in 2019. She’s excited to welcome her country folk to Chile’s stunning Andes Mountains.
“David Griffiths from the University of Melbourne is one of the international master teachers joining us, marking a significant milestone for Australian representation in the global music education scene,” Caroline said.

“In a first for the academy, talented Melbourne Conservatorium clarinet student, Patrick Vaughan, has been awarded one of the 52 coveted scholarships, showcasing the rising Australian talent on an international stage.

“We had 320 applicants from 16 countries, and those awarded with a place will experience a holistic approach to music education which includes musical technique, mindset coaching, stage presence, teamwork, body awareness, yoga, and leadership training.

“In future years, we’d love to see even more young Australian musicians apply for the scholarships.”

The Australian Embassy in Chile is actively involved in the festival and will sponsor an outreach concert in one of Santiago’s most challenging suburbs, highlighting Australia’s commitment to using culture and education as tools for social change.

Founder and Artistic Director of PortilloFest, and renowned conductor and violinist, Alejandra Urrutia, is thrilled to have so much Australian involvement in the festival.
“Caroline always brings that great Australian naturalness, warm leadership and egalitarianism to the organisation,” he said.

“David’s reputation as a musician and master teacher precedes him, and we’re hoping Patrick will be the first of many Australian scholarship winners. The fact that Todd Mercer, the Australian Ambassador to Chile, is supporting us, along with other Australian businesses, only speaks to a bright future of collaboration as we all support young talent making a big impact.”

Australian-owned Tierra Hotels is one of the sponsors of Portillo Festival.
