ForwardKeys, the leading travel intelligence firm, announced at WTM London at their annual Global Travel Trends report’s launch that the Dominican Republic is the global leader in post-pandemic travel recovery with international worldwide arrivals up by 14% versus the same period in 2019.
The most resilient origin market to the Dominican Republic shows a shift in popularity from the Americas, with nations such as Colombia, Puerto Rico, and Argentina, all in South America, beating in terms of growth the USA market, a longstanding top source market, regarding traveller volumes as seat capacity out of LATAM has been increased.
“Couples and Families are the most dominant group sizes to the Dominican Republic in 2023, and the ones that are the most resilient, with couples being 22% above 2019 and Families +31% compared to 2019,” says Juan Gomez, Head of Market Intelligence at ForwardKeys.
Tourism Minister David Collado expressed his satisfaction to start the agenda of the WTM fair in London, United Kingdom with a recognition of this magnitude: “Being No. 1 in the world, an island in the Caribbean with 10 million inhabitants, fills us with pride and satisfaction,” said Collado.
In 2023, there has been a 73% increase in premium class bookings to the Dominican Republic with triple-digit growths out of Brazil and Colombia, +206% and +392%.
Mr Juan Gomez Garcia, Head of Market Intelligence of ForwardKeys, who presented the report, highlighted the country’s achievements with the following words: “We have to highlight the marketing strategy that you are carrying out to reach premium markets…these and your other strategies are having a direct impact on the increase in arrivals this year versus previous years. This year, the Dominican Republic expects to close the year with the arrival of 10 million visitors for the first time, which added to this recognition demonstrates the country’s great growth in tourism.’
Looking ahead at the air ticketing data for January – March 2024 to the Dominican Republic, the future looks rosy with international inbound up by 56% versus 2019 levels. This is a huge achievement considering some parts of the world, such as the Asia-Pacific, will still be in the negative.
