KAI, a leading hot spring ryokan brand operated by Hoshino Resorts will open KAI Teshikaga in 2026 at Kawayu Onsen in Teshikaga, Hokkaido.
The second KAI property in Hokkaido following KAI Poroto, this establishment is to be developed simultaneously as the Akan Mashu National Park Kawayu Onsen Town Development Master Plan.
Situated in Eastern Hokkaido, Teshikaga is home to Lake Mashu as well as Japan’s largest caldera lake, Lake Kussharo. The entire region is known as the Akan Mashu National Park which is mostly protected as a nature conservation area.
Hokkaido is famous for its majestic nature, but eastern Hokkaido is especially renowned for it. The expansive Teshikaga area of the national park is a treasure trove of utterly unique natural attractions.
The exceptional quality of its spring water is renowned throughout Hokkaido as is its breathtaking scenery showcasing the incredible power of the earth, such as the constant rise of steam from active volcano Mount Io.
KAI Teshikaga will be a continuation of the KAI brand’s vision of embracing the surrounding nature of a hot spring ryokan as they aim to weave the natural beauty of Teshikaga into every aspect of their hospitality.
The Akan Mashu National Park Kawayu Onsen Town Development Master Plan was submitted in February 2023 as the basic concept behind the redevelopment project for the entire Kawayu Onsen through which the hot spring river flows.
Hoshino Resorts participated alongside Machi Seisakushitsu Co., Ltd. and Studio On Site to formulate and promote the master plan that is based on a development concept of “a caldera forest hot spring town woven together by a hot spring river” and proposes various spaces that draw from the lush nature of Akan Mashu National Park.
KAI Teshikaga, as announced in this release, is being planned as part of the community development with aims to make it a place where guests can enjoy and further their understanding of the beauty and fascination of the entire area throughout all moments of their stay.
