Rex Airlines, in a monumental stride, has augmented its flight operations from Brisbane, unveiling a series of new connections that are set to transform Queensland’s air travel landscape. Today marks a significant milestone as the first flight from Brisbane to Adelaide gracefully took to the skies, setting a new precedent in affordable and efficient travel between these bustling cities.
A cavalcade of esteemed dignitaries graced the occasion, witnessing this historic moment and celebrating the onset of a new era in Australian aviation. Among them were Rex Deputy Chairman John Sharp AM, Gert-Jan de Graaff, the CEO of Brisbane Airport Corporation, Queensland’s Assistant Minister for Tourism Industry Development Michael Healy MP, and Patricia O’Callaghan, the CEO of Tourism and Events Queensland.
In his address to the media, Mr Sharp elucidated on the pivotal role of National Jet Express (NJE), a member of the Rex Group, in operating the new services using the state-of-the-art De Havilland Q400NG aircraft. Known for its fuel efficiency and modern amenities, this aircraft is a testament to Rex’s commitment to sustainable and reliable air travel.
Mr Sharp accentuated the strategic importance of the new daily flights operated by a Boeing 737-800NG, projecting an additional annual seat capacity of 124,000 between Brisbane and Adelaide. He underscored the strong demand for the $149 launch fares, highlighting them as a testament to the airline’s unparalleled value for money, reliability, and operational excellence. Before the pandemic, these two cities witnessed a travel flux of 875,000 passengers, which Rex is poised to surpass with its competitive offerings.
“The forward bookings are firm, signifying a robust resurgence in travel demand. Our $149 fare has set a new benchmark in affordable travel, underscoring Rex’s position as Australia’s most reliable airline,” Mr Sharp asserted confidently.
The expansion doesn’t stop here. Queenslanders are in for a treat as Rex introduces its new Brisbane-Cairns service, priced competitively at $149, a staggering $56 cheaper than the lowest Qantas fare. This new route, operational from 22 November, is a testament to Rex’s unwavering commitment to connecting major Queensland cities and tourist hotspots, fostering tourism, and supporting local economies.
Further elevating Queensland’s air travel experience, Rex is introducing additional flights between Brisbane and Melbourne during the peak Christmas holidays, from 16 December to 7 January, catering to the increased demand. The arrival of Rex’s 10th Boeing 737-800NG next month is set to bolster this expansion, ensuring travellers have ample choices for their festive journeys.
Gert-Jan de Graaff of Brisbane Airport expressed his elation over this development, noting that Rex’s inaugural flight has restored Brisbane-Adelaide capacity to pre-pandemic levels. He emphasized the symbiotic relationship between Rex’s regional footprint and Brisbane Airport’s extensive network, heralding a new connectivity chapter for travellers from both states.
Echoing these sentiments, Patricia O’Callaghan of Tourism and Events Queensland highlighted the insatiable demand for Queensland’s tourist attractions. “We’ve been welcoming record numbers of domestic holiday visitors. Direct aviation access is paramount, and we are thrilled with Rex’s decision to expand services, further unlocking Queensland’s tourism potential,” she stated.
In his closing remarks, Queensland Assistant Tourism Minister Michael Healy underscored the critical role of expanded aviation services in bolstering tourism and creating jobs. “Rex’s additional routes fortify Queensland’s position as Australia’s favorite holiday destination, offering a kaleidoscope of experiences to visitors from across the nation and the globe,” he concluded.
In a landscape often dominated by giants, Rex’s latest strategic expansion positions it as a formidable player, unequivocally committed to connecting Australia’s cities and tourist destinations with efficiency, affordability, and an unwavering dedication to service excellence.
