BNE Central Check-inIn a monumental development that promises to reshape the landscape of Brisbane Airport, the $5 billion Future BNE initiative has been unveiled. This ambitious investment program, comprising over 150 projects, is poised to revolutionize Queensland’s vital transportation hub, enhancing traveller experiences and accommodating the burgeoning population’s needs over the next decade and beyond.

Led by the Brisbane Airport Corporation, this transformation encompasses upgrades to both the Domestic and International Terminals, in addition to the planned Terminal 3 Precinct. Furthermore, numerous aviation projects are on the horizon, such as aircraft parking expansion, runway resurfacing, and construction of an advanced Aeromedical facility for streamlined medical repatriation and emergency services.

Gert-Jan de Graaff, the CEO of Brisbane Airport Corporation, emphasizes the forward-thinking approach, stating, “We’re investing now to get ahead of the population growth curve so we’re ready for 2032 and beyond. We’re investing now so Queenslanders and the world are more closely connected. And we’re investing now to be a leader in sustainability.”

As Queensland’s population continues to soar, the airport’s significance as a pivotal employment hub is set to rise. Over 20,000 individuals work at Brisbane Airport across more than 600 employers, with forecasts predicting an additional 10,000 employees in the coming decade.

The Domestic Terminal Upgrade: A Glimpse into the Future

The first phase of this transformational journey kicks off with a substantial renovation of Brisbane Airport’s Domestic Terminal. This terminal, which first opened its doors just ahead of World Expo ’88, is set to undergo a modernization process designed to bring it into the 21st century.

The impetus for this renovation lies in the need to upgrade security screening equipment to meet Australian Government standards by the end of 2025. Brisbane Airport Corporation saw this as an opportune moment to embark on a series of projects that would usher Queensland’s gateway to the world into a new era.

De Graaff underscores the significance of this terminal, stating, “The Brisbane Airport Domestic Terminal is the most connected domestic terminal in Australia with services to 61 destinations, so it is a very important transport hub. Half of those destinations are in Queensland. In the past year, 20 million passengers traveled through Brisbane Airport, and we expect that to grow by 10 million passengers in the coming decade as Queensland’s population expands and our terminals need to be ready.”

During the construction period, which spans three years, passengers will experience changes in their journey through the airport. The airport has laid out a comprehensive support plan with airport ambassadors, customer service officers, updated signage, and online resources to ensure travellers’ comfort and safety. Passengers must arrive 90 minutes before their domestic flight to ensure a seamless departure during this period.

To minimize the impact on passengers, airlines, and retailers, Lendlease will manage this project through a staged approach.

Revolutionizing Security: A Leap Forward

One of the primary focuses of the Domestic Terminal Upgrade is the replacement of security screening systems in compliance with the Australian Government’s Strengthening Aviation Security Initiative. This upgrade mandates the installation of new Computed Tomography (CT) technology.

This technological advancement promises several benefits, including a streamlined security screening process that allows passengers to leave most items in their hand luggage, such as laptops and aerosols. Moreover, it enhances safety through improved security screening, creating a uniform experience across Australia’s major airports.

The security upgrade contract has been awarded to Rapiscan, a renowned name in the field.

Elevating the Experience: The New Mezzanine Level

To accommodate the size and weight of the new screening equipment, an innovative mezzanine level will be constructed above the existing Central Terminal Area. This engineering marvel will be realized while serving up to 60,000 passengers daily.

Upon completion, this mezzanine level will offer direct access from the “Skywalk” into Security Screening for passengers who have already checked in and possess carry-on bags. Throughout the construction period, passengers will receive guidance from airport personnel, ensuring a smooth transition.

De Graaff analogizes the project to “doing open heart surgery on a patient while running a marathon,” emphasizing the endeavour’s complexity. However, the airport is committed to meeting Australian Government security standards.

Lendlease will oversee the project management to ensure minimal disruptions to passengers, airlines, and retailers.

A State-of-the-Art Baggage System

Another milestone in this transformative journey is installing a cutting-edge baggage system within the Domestic Terminal. Currently comprising three separate systems dating back to the 1980s, this upgrade will unify the entire terminal under a single world-class system.

The benefits of this new system are manifold, promising better reliability, expanded capacity, enhanced security screening of checked-in bags, and energy-saving technology. The system is designed to shut down segments when no bags require processing, resulting in substantial energy savings.

To facilitate this upgrade, a new baggage hall will be constructed adjacent to the central satellite walkway. The current system will continue to operate until the new system is thoroughly tested and commissioned, ensuring a seamless transition.

Brisbane Airport Corporation has entrusted global automation specialists Alstef and Brock Solutions with the contract to build this state-of-the-art baggage handling system.

Self Check-in: Convenience Redefined

The Domestic Terminal Self Check-in upgrades are poised to revolutionize the check-in process for passengers travelling with domestic airlines. These new check-in areas will be intuitive and seamlessly integrated with bag drop and security screening, allowing passengers more time to relax and explore the airport.

Bathroom Refurbishments: Prioritizing Passenger Comfort

In response to customer feedback, Brisbane Airport invests in bathroom upgrades within the Domestic Terminal. These improvements encompass increased capacity, new fixtures, and sustainable design to reduce water usage. Moreover, the upgraded facilities will include accessible bathrooms and parenting rooms, catering to diverse passenger needs.

Dining Expansion: Culinary Delights Await

A significant dining expansion has begun in the Virgin Australia section of the terminal, including the construction a new bar with panoramic views of planes landing and departing. A total of 10 new food and beverage options will be introduced, including a remarkable 360-degree restaurant. Further details about these exciting tenants will be announced soon.

Refreshed Gate Departure Lounges: Modern and Sustainable

Departure gates adjacent to the retail upgrade will receive a contemporary makeover, with carpet and seating upgrades taking centre stage. New café-style social seating will provide passengers with a comfortable and engaging environment. The furniture is Australian-designed and manufactured, with sustainably grown Spotted Gum timber and recycled materials used extensively. Passengers can even enjoy views of aircraft taking off and landing, all while recharging their devices.

Charging Stations for Airside Electric Vehicles: Paving the Way for Sustainability

To reduce emissions and noise, Brisbane Airport is investing in charging stations for airside electric vehicles. The airport aims to have 70% of its airside vehicles electric by 2026, contributing to a more eco-friendly and passenger-friendly environment. Additionally, Brisbane Airport is committed to achieving net-zero emissions for scope 1 and 2 by 2025 and has secured a historic six-year agreement for renewable energy starting in 2025.

Bussing Lounges: Enhancing Passenger Transit

To provide passengers with a seamless bus transit experience to and from aircraft at remote parking bays, Brisbane Airport is designing bussing lounges. These lounges will focus on expanding capacity during peak times, improving passenger comfort, and reducing travel time.

Domestic Terminal P2 Car Park Expansion: Meeting Rising Demand

The pandemic has shifted passenger preferences toward driving to the airport, necessitating an expansion of the P2 car park. This expansion will add 1,700 additional car spaces, along with active transport storage for scooters and bikes, sheltered from the elements and conveniently located near the terminal and airport hotels.
