China's Golden WeekChina’s Golden Week Sees Explosive Growth in High-Quality Travel: Trip.com Reveals Unprecedented Statistics.

As the calendar pages turn towards China’s grandest annual spectacle, the 8-day Golden Week holiday, there’s a palpable wave of excitement in the travel industry. This combined celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day has always been a massive crowd-puller, but data suggests an unparalleled travel explosion this year.

A delve into the statistics from the vanguard of the travel industry, Trip.com Group, paints an optimistic future. Outbound travel bookings have skyrocketed, clocking a staggering 20-fold increase compared to the same juncture last year. Meanwhile, domestic travel isn’t far behind, quadrupling from 2022’s figures.

With international travel routes reinstated, Golden Week marks the first major vacationing spree on foreign shores since global mobility was disrupted. The favoured haunts for Chinese globetrotters encompass the usual suspects: Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, and the UK. But there’s a twist in the tale. Previously under-explored gems such as Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Sri Lanka, and Kenya have surfaced as travel darlings. These destinations have seen a meteoric rise in group tour bookings, echoing a resounding desire for authentic, lesser-treaded paths.

Another fascinating trend underscores the evolving psyche of the modern traveller. It’s not just about ticking off popular attractions anymore. There’s a noticeable pivot towards indulging in enriching, high-calibre experiences. The mushrooming demand for top-tier bookings across the globe is a testament to this shift. Numbers from Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe reflect an increase in five-star reservations by 562%, 559%, and 379%, respectively. Europe’s elite air travel segments have also seen a surge, with a 300% uptick in first-class and business-class seat bookings.

Jane Sun, the visionary CEO of Trip.com Group, opined, “The crescendo in travel bookings as Golden Week dawns is exhilarating. It mirrors a deep-seated urge among travelers to explore unparalleled experiences. We’ve pinpointed a decisive tilt towards luxurious services and profound travel interactions. Tourists are venturing beyond the mainstream, in search of raw and untouched escapades.”

Private tour sectors have also reaped the benefits, registering a surge in bookings for flexible, independent group travels during the National Day festivities. A noteworthy highlight is the hosting of the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, this year, acting as a catalyst for domestic tourism. Air ticket reservations surged five-fold, while hotel bookings witnessed an eight-fold hike.

A notable trend underpinning this surge is the augmented inclination for inter-provincial travel, which now constitutes 73% of the total orders, marking a 10% jump from last year. Moreover, nearly one in five users are leaning towards extended stays, with northwest locales like Burqin, Urumqi, Lanzhou, and Dunhuang becoming tourist magnets. South China’s idyllic spots, such as Sanya, Guangzhou, and Xiamen, continue to allure with their favourable climates.
