Amidst a globalized world where international travel is crucial, Turkish Airlines has set its sights on a new horizon: Australia. The airline recently submitted an ambitious application for direct flights to Sydney and Melbourne. This audacious move showcases Turkish Airlines’ commitment to expanding its international presence and enhancing global connectivity.
In an official announcement by Australia’s Transport Minister, Catherine King, it’s confirmed that the application from Turkish Airlines is under serious consideration. Should it gain approval, passengers might soon experience direct flights from Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport and Melbourne Airport to Turkey within a year.
This significant development comes after an earlier revelation by ch-aviation in July, highlighting the carrier’s blueprint to commence tri-weekly flights to Australia, with a strategic layover at Changi Airport in Singapore. The current air services agreement allows Turkish Airlines to operate up to seven weekly flights between Turkey and Australia. But Chairman Ahmet Bolat envisions bigger plans for the airline’s Australian venture. He aims to double this number to 14, emphasizing the airline’s aspiration for regional growth.
But Bolat’s dreams don’t end there. He is reportedly working on attaining fifth freedom rights, enabling Turkish Airlines to sell flight tickets between Australia and Singapore, further solidifying the airline’s stronghold in the Asia-Pacific region.
Travellers familiar with the airline will know of their existing daily service to Singapore from Istanbul. If approved, The upcoming Australia-bound flights are projected to have a journey time of approximately 21 hours, including the layover. Furthermore, passengers can anticipate luxury and comfort as Turkish Airlines’ 787-9s come equipped with premium business-class features like those seen on Singapore Airlines’ Airbus A350s and Boeing 787-10s.
In what can be termed a ‘sky diplomacy’, Qantas, Australia’s premier airline, has openly supported Turkish Airlines’ application. This move is strategic for Qantas, as the airline recently faced scrutiny for its lack of support towards Qatar’s bid for Australian routes. This endorsement for Turkish Airlines redeems Qantas’s image and underscores the importance of fostering global airline partnerships.
As the world watches, the potential for direct flights between Turkey and Australia creates palpable excitement. With both economies keen on strengthening bilateral ties, these new air routes can be a game-changer for business, tourism, and global cooperation.
