GTM Travel Media - Newsletter logoIn a landmark development to redefine Sydney’s southern CBD, renowned property and hospitality conglomerate Mulpha Australia has just secured a resounding green light from the City of Sydney Council for its visionary $200 million project.

In a triumphant announcement, Mulpha Australia, a prominent player in the property and hospitality sectors, has clinched the coveted development consent from the City of Sydney Council. The green signal paves the way for transforming the historic 355-357 Sussex Street, Sydney, into a dazzling 17-storey lifestyle hotel. This ambitious endeavour will encompass a remarkable 272 opulent hotel rooms, accompanied by exquisite ground-floor restaurant and bar facilities.

This project is not just about modernity; it’s a harmonious blend of old-world charm and contemporary luxury. The 5-storey warehouse building, believed to have originated around 1916 for Foley Brothers Pty Ltd, will be thoughtfully preserved. The heritage façade and various architectural elements narrating tales of a bygone era will remain intact.

The strategic location of this lifestyle hotel, nestled at the southern tip of Sydney’s Central Business District, promises a world of convenience for visitors and locals alike. With prime attractions such as Darling Harbour, the Powerhouse Museum, the International Convention Centre, the World Square shopping district, and the vibrant Chinatown precinct just a leisurely stroll away, this establishment is set to become the epicentre of luxury and leisure in the heart of the city.

Mulpha CEO Greg Shaw, beaming with pride, commented on this significant milestone, saying, “We are thrilled to receive approval for this new age hotel that will contribute to the ongoing rejuvenation of the southern CBD into one of the most vibrant areas of Sydney for visitors, residents, and workers.”

He added, “With the strong rebound in both domestic and international tourism, it is vital that we have shovel-ready projects to grow accommodation capacity and meet demand. Sydney is leading the way in the Australian accommodation industry, with strong occupancy levels set to increase further as the international market exceeds pre-Covid levels in 2024 and beyond. As the gateway to Australia, more quality hotels will reinforce Sydney’s status as a global center for business, finance, and education, while supporting the construction sector and broader economy.”

“This investment continues Mulpha’s long-term commitment to acquiring and developing high-quality tourism and hospitality assets in key Australian destinations. We are advancing negotiations with global hotel operators to introduce new innovative hotel products for the Sydney market.”

Mulpha’s ever-expanding Australian hospitality and tourism portfolio includes iconic properties like InterContinental Sydney, InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort, InterContinental Hayman Island, Bimbadgen Winery Estate, and the eagerly anticipated Palmers Lane Retreat in the Hunter Valley, set to welcome guests in October 2023.

Furthermore, Mulpha is at the forefront of several other visionary development projects, including Norwest Quarter, featuring 184 high-end apartments in Sydney’s Norwest area, Harbour One—a prestigious waterfront apartment project at Sanctuary Cove, Queensland, and Swing City—an innovative golf entertainment and hospitality concept located in the Norwest Business Park. The group also maintains an active presence in diverse sectors such as funds management, commercial real estate, debt, hospitality, education, technology, car parking, and childcare.

As Mulpha Australia charts this ambitious course of growth and innovation, the $200 million Sussex Street hotel development is a testament to their unwavering commitment to excellence in the hospitality and property industry. With construction slated to commence in the first half of 2024 and completion anticipated in mid-2026, a new era in Sydney’s luxury hospitality is on the horizon.
