Your passport to adventure begins with vaccinationAs summer approaches, Aussies are eagerly gearing up for international travel, seeking adventure and relaxation in their favourite holiday destinations. However, amidst the excitement, a critical aspect of their travel checklist may be overlooked, potentially turning their dream vacations into health nightmares.

A recent survey has revealed that while 85% of Australian travellers plan to journey overseas this summer, almost half (49%) have experienced illness due to consuming contaminated food or water while abroad. Shockingly, the same survey highlighted that 85% of these travellers fail to research the health recommendations specific to their chosen destinations, leaving them vulnerable to various health risks, including infectious diseases not prevalent in Australia.

These findings have prompted the Immunisation Coalition, a leading advocate for comprehensive immunization throughout life, to issue a crucial warning to all Australians planning international trips this summer. The message is clear: prioritize your health by getting vaccinated at least six to eight weeks before your departure date.

Dr. Ginni Mansberg, Immunisation Coalition Board Director, emphasized the importance of pre-travel health consultations with healthcare professionals. She stated, “With families excited to travel abroad this upcoming holiday season, it is crucial to add speaking to your GP about travel health and vaccine recommendations for your holiday to your pre-travel checklist. Consultations six to eight weeks prior to your departure are essential. Vaccinations just before departure don’t provide the immune system ample time to effectively respond.”

Disturbingly, 31% of travellers either skip discussing travel health and vaccination requirements with their doctors or leave consultations too close to their departure dates to receive complete protection. This negligent approach has led to 43% of Aussie travellers seeking professional medical assistance when travelling to at-risk destinations.

Renowned Australian travel doctor Dr Deb Mills highlighted the significance of proper pre-travel health advice: “It’s crucial for travellers to organize a travel health consultation with a GP or travel doctor at least six to eight weeks prior to travel. The recommended vaccines will depend on where they are going, what they will be doing, the duration of their stay, and their past medical and vaccine history. Healthcare professionals help travellers know how to avoid local health risks and what to do if they get sick overseas. The souvenir no one wants to bring home is a germ to infect family, friends, and the community.”

Interestingly, food tourism has been a driving motivator for travel in 2023, with two in three (64%) Aussies looking for destinations to experience and enjoy the local food and drink culture. However, travellers might not be aware of the health risks associated with consuming food or water from new places, with half of travellers (49%) believing they got sick due to something they ate or drank.

As part of its mission to protect Australians travelling overseas, the Immunisation Coalition urges all Aussie travellers to be proactive in understanding the vaccinations they require before embarking on international journeys and to engage in a comprehensive discussion with their GP about their vaccination options. By prioritizing their health and safety, travellers can ensure their summer adventures are unforgettable for all the right reasons. Don’t let preventable illnesses mar your dream vacation; take the necessary precautions and make your passport to adventure a journey to remember for a lifetime.
