The U.S. tourism sector experienced an impressive surge in July 2023, seeing international visitors pour almost $18 billion into the economy. As fresh data from the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) indicates, this upsurge underscores a robust 24 percent ascent in contrast to the same month in 2022, marking the pinnacle of monthly tourism expenditures since the end of 2019.
In an interesting counterpoint, Americans proved to be avid global explorers, investing over $17.2 billion in overseas travel in the same period. However, the U.S. stood firm with a favourable balance of trade surplus amounting to $777 million. This figure portrays the fourth month of gains from travel and tourism-related products and services.
Cumulatively, the opening seven months of 2023 saw international tourists spend an astounding $118.5 billion on U.S. travel and associated commodities, a year-on-year growth of 34 percent. This translates to an infusion of more than $559 million into the American economy every single day.
Delving into the nuances of this spending:
- Travel Expenditures: International tourists parted with $9.7 billion in July 2023, marking a 27 percent increase compared to $7.7 billion in 2022. This spending covered diverse services and goods ranging from food, accommodation, and entertainment to local transportation.
- Air Travel: Revenues generated by U.S. carriers from international travellers increased, hitting $3.4 billion, a significant 28 percent hike from July 2022.
- Medical, Educational, and Short-term Visits: Expenditures in these categories reached $4.9 billion in July 2023, up by 15 percent against the same period in the previous year.
These statistics underline the importance and vitality of the travel and tourism sector in boosting the U.S. economy, painting an optimistic picture for the future.
