This picturesque destination, Australia’s closest and most cherished neighbour, shines against all odds despite post-pandemic recovery challenges and dwindling flight connections.

During the initial six months of 2023, New Caledonia celebrated the arrival of an astonishing 54,184 international tourists via air, marking a 2.3% increase compared to the first half of 2019’s figures. Delving deeper into the data, Australian travellers demonstrated their undeniable interest in this piece of paradise with a whopping 29% hike, bringing the total Aussie footfalls to 13,853. Unsurprisingly, Australians are the second-largest demographic gracing these pristine shores following Metropolitan France.

In a significant announcement, the national flag bearer, Aircalin, has proclaimed the recommencement of its Melbourne-Noumea route – a connection lost in the early days of the pandemic. Starting December 8th, travellers can take advantage of the thrice-a-week flight from Melbourne to Noumea, flying out every Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday.

This revived connection complements the existing Brisbane and Sydney routes, making New Caledonia even more accessible to Australians. It’s worth noting that the breezy 3-hour-35-minute flight from Melbourne makes spontaneous long weekends in New Caledonia a tantalising possibility. Furthermore, Aircalin’s symbiotic codeshare agreement with the domestic airline Air Calédonie ensures seamless onward journeys to enchanting islands like Lifou and the Isle of Pines.

Rebecca Marchal, the Account Director for New Caledonia Tourism Australia, exudes palpable excitement when discussing this South Pacific gem’s escalating allure. She said, “The magnetic charm of New Caledonia beckons travellers to our breathtaking destination. We’re thrilled that Aircalin has restored the Melbourne-Noumea corridor, opening doors for Victorians to embark on unforgettable journeys.”

Echoing her sentiments, Aircalin’s General Manager for Australia, Chris Thistlethwaite, highlights the proximity and variety that New Caledonia presents, stating, “Being Australia’s nearest South Pacific confidante, New Caledonia unravels a myriad of activities and vacation wonders, especially for Victorians.”

This tourism renaissance in New Caledonia didn’t materialize out of thin air.
