Fukuoka delivers on so many things that I am sure that your visit will be memorable.
Doing kimono dress is as easy in Fukuoka as anywhere else, and I am told it is more economical and less busy. This applies to many Japanese cultural experiences.
Fly into Fukuoka and surface to cities such as Osaka, Kyoto, Tokyo, etc. Fly home from another city. Fukuoka is called the “gateway to Asia,” so making the trip via Fukuoka means you could include Korea or Taiwan on the way to Japan.
Access Busan, South Korea, from Fukuoka with a 50-minute flight or a 4.0-hour ferry journey. Or fly Fukuoka to the South Korean Island of Jeju in the Korea Strait, in an hour as it is only 361 kilometres away. The best time to visit is April – June and September- October. It has unique cuisine, beaches, and seascapes of coral.
Fukuoka is also the gateway to Kyushu Island and its vast array of cultural and traditional activities. In 2022, Time magazine named Kyushu one of the most extraordinary destinations to explore.
Fukuoka is an excellent addition to your tourist plans. In fact, Fukuoka and Kyushu could be a very viable two-plus weeks visit on its own, with Fukuoka as your base. In my articles, I outline some of them. It is a great alternative. Fukuoka offers the Japanese experiences you want in less time, money, and hassle.
Costs are a factor in visiting an area. We just had two months in Japan with Fukuoka as our base. So, yes, costs had to be considered. Of course, we visited Osaka and Kyoto this time, but we returned home’ to Fukuoka. Our ‘home’ in Fukuoka is The Amistad Residential Apartments. I’ve written about the Amistad in previous articles and can highly recommend it for quality accommodation, friendly service, cleanliness (of course), and amenities at a reasonable cost. (See: www.amistad-hotel-fukuoka.com/)
Fukuoka has a population of about 1.5 million people. It is a busy city but much less crowded and hectic. The sixth largest city in Japan. Fukuoka says it’s growing because they are popular! While it’s a working city, you will avoid any rush hour crushes. We stayed near Hakata Station, which is the transportation hub, and never experienced unbearable crowds. Except near the Shinkansen platform on a Friday afternoon!
Unforgettable Cuisine
Food capital and its many options are one big reason to visit Fukuoka. Everything is delicious is there!!
Fukuoka is a premier food destination even within Japan. Enjoy some warming ramen or enjoy a bite of yakitori at one of the many yatai dinner carts.
Among Japanese cities Fukuoka is quite popular. As of 2020, they are among the most moved into cities by youth. In Fukuoka if something isn’t going on, it’s in the planning.
A Shopper’s Paradise
As one of Japan’s largest cities, they abound in variety and choice when it comes to shopping. Come check out Canal City while you are here and take a look.
Compact and Easy to get around!
With a comprehensive subway system and most important facilities within a 15-minute journey of one another, getting around couldn’t be easier. Whether you’re travelling to an event, or doing a spot of sightseeing, Fukuoka is easy to get around.
