99 Bottles of rum on the wall…

Imbibis Craft Distillery has 99 bottles of Heritage City Rum, the first rum distilled in Ipswich since 1905, to sell during Galvanized.  While Bundaberg might be the most famous location to distil rum in Queensland, Ipswich was pumping out the spirits a few years before the now-famous Bundy distillery was in action.  Thomas Lorimer Smith built a steam-operated sugar mill in Marburg in 1882. He built a rum distillery capable of producing 800 gallons a day at the Woodlands of Marbrug estate, but was forced to close it when effluent polluted Black Snake Creek.  After a depression in the mid-1890s followed by one of the worst droughts on record the Woodlands estate was auctioned in 1905. The mansion and about 400 acres were retained by the Smiths, and the mill was sold to the Gibson family.

Imbibis are also distilling a new coffee flavoured liquor and have a tonic masterclass on August 27 where you can learn the secrets to making the perfect G&T.

And during Galvanized you can book into a Distillery Tour and Tasting and learn about Ipswich’s rum history.  Tours will run Friday September 1 and Monday September 4 – Friday September 8 at 2pm.

Reception this Way: Motels – A sentimental journey with Tim Ross

Media are invited to the opening of the The Workshops Rail Museum’s newest exhibit Reception this Way: Motels – A sentimental journey with Tim Ross on Thursday August 24.

Morning tea will be provided.  Interview opportunities include Jim Thompson CEO Queensland Museum Network, Jennifer Garcia The Workshops Rail Museum Head, Catriona Donnely National Archives of Australia Curator.

About the exhibition: In a land where the car has provided us with the ultimate freedom to hit the road and explore, it is no surprise that Australians wholeheartedly embraced the American concept of the motel. When motels began springing up in the 1950s, they represented a new, stylish and sophisticated way to travel. Now, you can take a nostalgic trip back in time, and travel around Australia revisiting your memories of the classic Aussie motel, from family holidays and long road trips in the sweltering summer heat, to continental breakfasts and mid-century mod cons…

Developed by National Archives of Australia in collaboration with comedian Tim Ross, and proudly hosted by The Workshops Rail Museum, the exhibition of photographs and promotional film footage featured in Reception this way will take you back to a time when the roadside motel was an integral part of the Australian holiday experience.

A national touring exhibition developed by the National Archives of Australia, supported by the National Collecting Institutions Touring and Outreach Program, an Australian Government program aiming to improve access to the national collections for all Australians.
