With his relentless efforts, unique initiatives, and unshakable belief in the power of unity, he took Seychelles’ tourism industry from the brink of a 25% decline in visitor arrivals to new, unimaginable heights.

Taking Charge in a Time of Need

In 2011, Seychelles was forecasting a grim decline in tourist arrivals. During this crucial juncture, the government turned to Alain St. Ange, a name synonymous with success in the private sector. An exclusive interview by Christine Ouma, published earlier, shed light on St. Ange’s extraordinary vision and unwavering commitment to his country.

Collaboration, Culture, and Carnival

St. Ange’s approach wasn’t just about marketing or advertisements. He believed in the intrinsic value of Seychelles’ culture, heritage, and people. From organizing the ‘Carnival of Carnivals’ that attracted international press like CNN, BBC, and Sky News to establishing Seychelles-India Day, Seychelles-China Day, and other multicultural feasts, he showcased Seychelles’ true spirit.

These initiatives attracted global attention and celebrated Seychelles’ unity and diversity, setting it apart from other tourism destinations.

Transforming Seychelles through the Vanilla Islands Initiative

St. Ange’s visionary leadership was not limited to Seychelles alone. His efforts to unify the Indian Ocean region through the Vanilla Islands Initiative brought together nations like Reunion, Mauritius, Comoros, Madagascar, Maldives, and Mayotte.

By supporting each other’s cultural events and festivals, the Indian Ocean nations created a unique marketing approach that rivalled the Caribbean Style. More information on the Vanilla Islands’ affiliation can be found here.

Building Intra-Africa Tourism

As Founding President of the African Tourism Board, St. Ange worked tirelessly to rewrite Africa’s narrative. He brought together Tourism Boards and private sector organizations to highlight the continent’s positive aspects and challenge stereotypes.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the African Tourism Board implemented a HOPE project to retrain people and reorganise tourism.

Legal Battle and Future Aspirations

St. Ange’s bid to become the Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) was a significant episode in his career. Though political interference thwarted his ambition, a subsequent court victory against the Government of Seychelles awarded him $507,000.

His Saint Ange Tourism Consultancy continues to impact tourism across Africa and ASEAN. With his recent recognition at the ITB Tourism Trade Fair in Berlin and the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award for Promotion of the Travel Trade’ by the Pacific Area Writers Association, St. Ange remains an influential figure.

A Vision for Seychelles and Beyond

St. Ange’s view on Seychelles’ tourism today reflects wisdom and insight. He emphasizes the country’s dependence on tourism as its number one economic pillar, urging it to “breath tourism, live tourism, sleep tourism, eat tourism.”

In conclusion, Alain St. Ange’s unique blend of vision, action, and passion revolutionized Seychelles’ tourism and significantly promoted unity, culture, and collaboration across Africa. His story is an inspiration and a beacon for global leaders seeking to transform their countries’ destinies through innovation, resilience, and an unwavering belief in their people’s potential.
