Set against the historical backdrop of the Old Town Alexandria in Virginia, the famed George Mason Hotel is poised for an extraordinary transformation in 2024. With just a stone’s throw away from Washington, D.C., the iconic building will soon wear a new identity as Hotel Heron, bringing an exciting blend of tradition and modernity to the locale.
Hotel Heron, an unprecedented partnership between Aparium Hotel Group, May Riegler Companies, and Potomac Investment Properties, aims to revitalize the antique structure, transforming it into an active social epicentre. The pioneering project is anchored by Washington D.C.-based architect Antonovich Associates and design firm Streetsense, blending classic architectural elements with contemporary innovation.
Constructed in 1926, the George Mason Hotel was a paragon of Colonial Revival architecture. In its prime, it was one of the most advanced hotels of its era and a coveted location for grand social gatherings. Today, the building is set to take on a fresh lease of life as the Hotel Heron. The renewed property will boast 134 luxurious guest rooms, top-tier dining options, a state-of-the-art fitness centre, and an assortment of modern co-working and meeting spaces for fostering creativity and collaboration.
Hotel Heron’s distinctive restaurant will operate across all meal times, offering a delightful gastronomic journey through the local produce of the Chesapeake Bay region and beyond. It will also encompass a bar, serving as an all-day go-to spot for tea, coffee, and cocktail enthusiasts.
A bespoke central bar and lounge add a unique twist to the hotel’s social spaces. With its enticing décor and expansive cocktail list, the lounge will also feature an array of shareable culinary delights. Complementing these offerings, a seasonal rooftop cocktail bar will offer stunning views of the Potomac River, a handpicked selection of wines primarily from East Coast vintners, and a curated menu of limited-edition local brews.
The prime location of Hotel Heron in Old Town, a nationally recognized historic district, allows guests to discover the charm of the King Street Mile. With its antiquated architecture, cobblestone pathways, art studios, historical attractions, and a myriad of independent shops and eateries, the neighbourhood offers an immersive historical experience. In addition, the hotel offers easy access to Washington D.C., including the National Mall and iconic city museums and monuments, making it a gateway to the capital’s cultural landmarks.
Michael Kitchen, Partner of Aparium Hotel Group, expressed his excitement about the project, stating, “Hotel Heron will serve as a vibrant hub, bridging the gap between travelers and enriching experiences, resonating with the cultural essence of this world-class destination.”
Eric May, co-founder and principal of May Riegler Companies, said, “Hotel Heron perfectly aligns with our mission to create unique products in urban-infill locations that meet the needs of today’s travelers, city dwellers, workers, and retail customers.”
Rich Jordan, managing director of Potomac Investment Properties, emphasized the importance of the transformative adaptive reuse of this iconic property, complementing the vibrant fabric of the historic Old Town neighbourhood.
