The festivities, set to take place from August 2 to October 31, 2023, promise to capture the allure of San Francisco while honouring the city’s unique cable cars with an intriguing competition.

An array of specialty offers, such as commemorative 150th-anniversary beverages at each participating venue, also punctuate the anniversary festivity. Patrons can relish in a complimentary globally-loved Irish coffee at Buena Vista or savour the revamped “Cable Car” cocktail at Tonga Room’s Hurricane Bar. In keeping with the theme, Scoma’s serves up a distinctive “SF Cable Car Crawl” Cocktail, while the Westin St. Francis’ Clock Bar introduces a special Cable Car Anniversary cocktail. Remember to take selfies at each location and on the cable car, then share your experiences on social media using #SFCableCarCrawl and #AlwaysSF.
The Cable Car Crawl event, from August 2 to October 31, 2023, promises to delight and engage city dwellers and tourists alike. Contest winners will be announced by November 5, 2023. Attendees are encouraged to use the all-day, all-Muni pass, priced at $13, or the special $5 all-day pass valid for the California cable car line, encouraging exploring neighbourhoods along the route.
The timeless charm of San Francisco’s cable cars extends beyond the aesthetic to symbolize the city’s resilience and inventive spirit, says Joe D’Alessandro, President & CEO of the San Francisco Travel Association. Rick Laubscher, President of Market Street Railway, highlights the city’s uniqueness as the only one in the world to maintain running street cable cars since 1957.
The city’s transportation agency, SFMTA, its preservation partner, Market Street Railway, and a dozen other organizations are set to offer a suite of memorable events to mark the 150th anniversary of the iconic cable cars, an integral part of the city’s identity. The celebrations align perfectly with the sentiment of activist Friedel Klussmann, who saved the cable cars in 1947, “Can you imagine San Francisco without its Cable Cars?”
