United Airlines is fortifying its position as a leading transpacific carrier by unveiling an ambitious expansion plan for fall 2023. Capitalizing on its unique strengths in international markets, United will become the first U.S. airline to offer a direct flight to Manila from the continental U.S. This new move comes in addition to a raft of expanded services to Tokyo, Hong Kong, Taipei, and sets United apart from its competitors in the highly competitive transpacific market.
United is the largest U.S. carrier operating across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The airline’s latest route announcement takes this dominance a step further. Starting in October 2023, United will offer non-stop flights to 15 unique international destinations across the Pacific during winter. This expansion signifies that United’s transpacific network will be an impressive 50% larger than all other U.S. airlines combined, excluding mainland China flights.
United’s strategic move to scale operations is part of its broader growth strategy. The airline has already established itself as a trailblazer in the industry. Earlier this year, it announced the most substantial South Pacific network expansion in aviation history, marking a 40% increase in flights between the U.S. and Australia/New Zealand.
In a statement regarding the expansion, Patrick Quayle, senior vice president of global network planning and alliances at United, noted, “United offers more flights to more destinations across the Pacific than all other U.S. airlines combined.” He elaborated on the airline’s excitement to offer the new service to Manila and expand access to Hong Kong, Taipei, and Tokyo.
Beginning October 29, the new San Francisco-Manila flight will be available to travellers. United, already the only U.S. airline serving Manila from Guam and Palau, will be the exclusive carrier offering a non-stop service from the continental U.S. to the Philippines. Furthermore, starting October 28, United will also provide a new service between Los Angeles and Hong Kong, complementing its existing San Francisco route. Tickets for these routes are now available on United.com and the United app.
United’s expansion plans also extend to Tokyo, with the airline resuming non-stop flights between Los Angeles and Tokyo/Narita, supplementing the existing service to Tokyo-Haneda. Meanwhile, the airline will ramp up flights to Taipei by adding a second daily year-round service from San Francisco, affording customers additional flight times between the two cities.
Amid the launch of these new routes, United is also preparing to make history in the South Pacific. This upcoming northern winter, United will operate 66 flights weekly between the U.S. and Australia/New Zealand, establishing itself as the leading airline in the region. Highlights of the expansion include the introduction of non-stop service to Christchurch, New Zealand, from San Francisco, daily flights between San Francisco and Brisbane and Melbourne, and twice-daily flights between San Francisco and Sydney.
As United continues to soar in its transpacific dominance, it strengthens its claim as the flag carrier of the U.S., meeting the needs of the ever-evolving global traveller and setting a new benchmark in aviation history.
