For travellers with early morning flights, nothing beats the convenience and relaxed state of mind brought by a stay at an airport hotel the night before travel. Rather than fight morning peak hour crowds on public transport or bumper-to-bumper traffic on the roads, a simple stroll to the terminal or easy transfer by free shuttle is a great way to start a day of flying.
At Milan’s Malpensa Airport, Marriott’s Moxy brand has brought a contemporary vibe to airport accommodation. A colourful entrance is a harbinger of the playful style found throughout the property. As is the current trend for hotels catering to a younger generation of travellers, the multifunctional space encountered upon entry into the hotel sees the check-in desk sharing a large counter with the food service area.
Tables and chairs for eating, working, or anything else are there, too, and the open space flows into a living room and dedicated work area where the decor focuses on fun. The entire ground floor becomes a dining room in the morning when a surprisingly varied array of appealing food options is available for breakfast. A stylish terrace provides an outdoor area for guest use throughout the day.
Upstairs, the guestrooms at Moxy have everything a traveller needs. Comfortable beds, immaculate bathrooms, free wifi, and USB ports on the nightstands are paramount to Moxy’s clientele. Modern-day hotel guests expect these aspects; what is unexpected is the beautiful view of the Italian Alps out the window and the relative calm not customarily associated with a so-called airport hotel. The entertainment is free for avgeeks who like to watch planes taking off.
Hotels in central Milan are heavily booked throughout the year; in summer, there are hordes of tourists. During the rest of the year, a seemingly endless parade of industry events fills the rooms and suites of the city’s best hotels. This is another reason Moxy is an appealing option in Milan.
In contrast to the hustle and bustle of hotels in the CBD, Moxy Milan Malpensa Airport is an oasis of calm in a quiet area on the edge of the airport near the just reopened Terminal 2, now used exclusively by easyJet. The stop for the free airport shuttle bus to Terminal 1 is just across from the hotel.
Some people on the shuttle bus were not air passengers on the day but rather hotel guests who chose to stay at Moxy for the duration of their time in the Milan area, taking advantage of Terminal 1’s train station to make the short trip into the city centre or elsewhere in the region. That is completely understandable for people seeking satisfactory accommodation at a reasonable price in a convenient location.
