At the heart of Wellington’s cultural precinct, Tākina Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre is New Zealand’s newest meeting place.
Currently the venue for MEETINGS 2023, Tākina prides itself on being a place of welcoming, learning and sharing.
Inspired by Wellington’s dramatic landscape and environment, Tākina means to “invoke,” presenting Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington) as a place where people come together to talk and think. With two levels of purpose-built event space designed for the ultimate experience,
the ground floor hosts a premium café and a rotating calendar of world-class exhibitions.
Using local, sustainable and delicious cuisine chosen to showcase the region, plus cutting-edge contemporary design and panoramic views over the city and Wellington Harbour, Tākina offers the ultimate Wellington experience.
Situated across the road from the National Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa in the heart of the capital, Tākina is surrounded by the city’s best accommodations and eateries. It’s a 15-minute drive from the airport.
Tākina has more than 50 multi-day conferences already booked in the first year.
Sustainability
An ambitious city, Wellington has long been a leader in climate change and is already the lowest carbon city per capita in Australasia. In 2019, Wellington City Council adopted Te Atakura – First to Zero, a blueprint to make Wellington a net zero-carbon city by 2050.
Wellington has been named the most livable city for two consecutive years and is ranked first globally for environmental security. As a compact city, it has high use of public transport and relatively low car ownership.
Te Whanganui-a-Tara is one of the few cities in the world experiencing an increase in biodiversity, credited to creating urban sanctuary Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne. As the world’s first fully-fenced urban ecosanctuary, Zealandia is pursuing a 500-year vision to regenerate the 225-hectare valley the fence protects. Its work has motivated local communities to contribute to a greener capital where nature can thrive.
Sustainability and Tākina
Environmental sustainability and resilience are at the heart of Tākina.
With a focus on reducing energy and water, sustainable materials use, and renewable energy capability, Tākina is a landmark for Wellington’s sustainable future. It has been awarded a 5-Star Green Star certification representing New Zealand’s excellence in environmental sustainability.
Designed to operate efficiently at all use levels, Tākina aimed for a 66% reduction in operational carbon emissions when benchmarked against a comparable new build. Its location in the heart of Wellington means more opportunities for active, eco-friendly transportation.
Tākina Food Philosophy
“Our mission is to nourish people and ideas with local, sustainable, and delicious cuisine,” says Executive Chef Ilavarasu Rajendran. “With sustainability at its core our menu has created diverse offerings that features regional, seasonal ingredients which save on food miles.”
A crucial part of Tākina Events’ food philosophy is collaborating with local suppliers. Servicing both Tākina and Te Papa, New Zealand’s national museum, the menu showcases a vibrant taste of the capital, with 90% of suppliers based in the Wellington region.
The development of culinary offerings is continually geared towards reducing the environmental footprint of Tākina Events while nurturing and preserving the values of Mana Taonga. These guiding principles acknowledge local communities’ vital role in sourcing our products and telling our region’s story.
