Vietjet, the pioneering Vietnamese airline, has expanded its wings, unveiling the first direct flight route between Ho Chi Minh City and Brisbane. This monumental launch will uplift both economies by infusing an estimated 370 local jobs and injecting a staggering $100 million into the Australian market over the coming three years.
Bringing Vietnam and Queensland closer than ever, Vietjet’s inaugural flight marked the initiation of bi-weekly return journeys between the two cities. Over 39,000 seats are projected to be offered in the first year of operation, presenting a remarkable upsurge in bilateral trade opportunities.
Expanding its reach across Australia’s east coast, Vietjet now serves Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane with eight weekly return flights. An increase in flight frequency between Sydney and Melbourne is scheduled for September. Visit Vietjet’s official website for the complete schedule and fare details.
At the official ceremony, Michael Hickey, the Chief Operating Officer of Vietjet, remarked on the unique connection between Brisbane and Ho Chi Minh City. The addition of direct flights on Vietjet will streamline travel between these cities, further enhancing inter-country and regional connections.
Stirling Hinchliffe, the Tourism Minister, heralded this development as a fantastic stride in the backdrop of Vietnam’s burgeoning economy. Given its rich lifestyle and direct flight availability, he emphasized Queensland’s potential as a holiday destination for Vietnamese travellers.
In line with this, Queensland Government has extended its support for Vietjet by allocating a part of its $200 million international aviation fund. This fund underscores Vietjet’s potential to generate nearly $30 million annually for Queensland’s visitor economy and create up to 370 jobs. The introduction of non-stop flights from Ho Chi Minh City is also set to turbocharge the influx of Vietnamese international students in Queensland, which witnessed a 24% rise this year.
Queensland exporters are also set for a boon as the new service is poised to open up substantial freight capacity between Brisbane and Vietnam. Gert-Jan de Graaff, the CEO of Brisbane Airport Corporation, welcomed Vietjet to the BNE family, praising Vietnam’s growth and the opportunities this direct route will provide for its citizens to explore Queensland.
This development also marks a victory for Queensland’s $200 million Attracting Aviation Investment Fund, jointly funded by the Queensland Government and the state’s international airports. The fund aims to expedite the recovery of Queensland’s visitor economy.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese hailed the new Vietjet service during a Bilateral Meeting in Hanoi, emphasizing the mutual benefits and opportunities this venture presents for stronger people-to-people relationships.
