Hawke's Bay, New Zealand (NASA, International Space Station, 08/10/14)As a beacon of premier tourist destinations, New Zealand raises the bar again with two momentous accomplishments. These accolades solidify the nation’s status in the global spotlight, positioning it as the sine qua non for travellers seeking unparalleled experiences. The picturesque Hawke’s Bay has been distinguished as the newest Great Wine Capital of the world, joining the entire cohort of globally acclaimed wine regions. Furthermore, the diverse landscapes of Waitaki Whitestone have earned the coveted designation of a UNESCO Global Geopark, a first for both New Zealand and Australasia.

A Toast to Hawke’s Bay: Now a Great Wine Capital

Hawke’s Bay, the cradle of New Zealand’s viticulture, has been officially recognised as the 12th Great Wine Capital, a position held only by elite wine destinations like Bordeaux (France), Bilbao (Spain), and Napa Valley (USA).  This honour celebrates Hawke’s Bay’s outstanding viticultural industry, which combines picturesque vineyard scenery, historic Art Deco architecture, and engaging cellar-door bike tours, creating an unparalleled wine-tasting experience.

Hawke’s Bay’s ascension to this esteemed league followed a meticulous selection process examining various facets such as the region’s viticultural industry, its historical significance, the attractiveness of its wine tourism, educational potential, business landscape, and overall appeal. Hamish Saxton, CEO of Hawke’s Bay Tourism, lauded the achievement, noting that it cements the region’s place on the global stage. The selection also provides a much-needed boost to the industry grappling with the aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle.

Waitaki Whitestone: A UNESCO-accredited Geopark

In a remarkable feat, the Waitaki Whitestone Geopark has been officially declared New Zealand’s first and Australasia’s only UNESCO Global Geopark. This honour reinforces New Zealand’s commitment to preserving the region’s unique geological and cultural heritage while endorsing sustainable development and community engagement. It also includes the nation among an exclusive list of 48 countries holding such a prestigious designation.

Nestled in the South Island’s Canterbury and Otago regions, the Waitaki Whitestone Geopark unfurls a canvas of geological wonders from the towering Southern Alps to the serene Pacific Ocean. The park hosts over 40 geological sites spanning an expansive area of more than 7,200 square kilometres. Notable attractions include the majestic Elephant Rocks, the otherworldly pinnacles of the Clay Cliffs, and the iconic Moeraki Boulders. These sites offer visitors glimpses into the area’s vibrant history, from its prehistoric flora and fauna to remnants of ancient volcanoes.

The Waitaki Whitestone Geopark Trust Chair, Helen Jansen, expresses her excitement, stating, “It is the collective wisdom of many contributors over the years that has brought Waitaki and New Zealand to this exciting and historic moment.”

A New Era for New Zealand

These twin accomplishments—Hawke’s Bay’s entry into the Great Wine Capitals and Waitaki Whitestone Geopark’s UNESCO Global Geopark status—pave a golden path for New Zealand’s tourism industry. They reaffirm the nation’s dedication to showcasing its unique natural and cultural treasures, offering visitors a dynamic palette of experiences, from the exquisite wines of Hawke’s Bay to the geological wonders of Waitaki Whitestone. These milestones clearly show that New Zealand is more than just a destination—an adventure waiting to be discovered.
