In an unprecedented triumph, Disney Cruise Line (DCL) again bags the prestigious Blue Circle Award for Environmental Stewardship from the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, hitting a remarkable decade-long streak of sustainable operation.
Renowned for their delightful voyages across the oceans, DCL’s conservation endeavours are less frequently in the spotlight but equally deserving of applause. The award is a testament to their diligent commitment towards environmental preservation and sustainable operation as part of the port’s voluntary EcoAction Program and Energy Action Initiative.
Barry Compagnoni, DCL’s Vice President for Safety, Security and Environmental Policy and Compliance, expressed his pride in the achievement. “This award embodies our unwavering commitment to operating with environmental responsibility and sustainability, particularly while cruising in the Pacific Northwest,” he stated. “We’ve prioritized efforts to cut emissions, conserve energy, and protect the region’s rich biodiversity, upholding our legacy of nurturing a healthier environment.”
One might wonder, how does a mammoth cruise ship lessen its environmental footprint? One of DCL’s primary strategies when sailing through the pristine waters of Alaska and Canada is to disconnect from the ship’s engines and tap into the port’s shoreside electricity grid. This innovative approach allows the onboard lighting, air conditioning, and other systems to operate almost emission-free without disrupting the cruise experience for guests and crew.
The strategy’s efficacy was particularly evident in Vancouver, where the port’s electrical grid is powered by hydro- and wind power. The Disney Wonder, a famous ship in the DCL fleet, reported a staggering 99% reduction in emissions by using shore power during its dockings in Vancouver last year.
Yet, shore power utilization is just one thread in DCL’s intricate web of sustainability efforts. These strides support The Walt Disney Company’s ambitious pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030.
The cruise line is also a pioneer in fuel innovation, investing heavily in low-emission fuels. This includes using ultra-low sulphur fuel on ships’ Magic and Dream classes and integrating Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) on its newest vessels. They also explore using green methanol for a newly acquired ship set to homeport in Singapore in 2025.
Besides their marine conservation efforts, DCL is championing the fight against single-use plastics. The line has almost completely phased out such plastics across its fleet, replacing plastic straws with eco-friendly alternatives, installing refillable bath product dispensers in guest rooms, eliminating plastic bags from onboard stores, and swapping plastic water bottles for recyclable aluminium counterparts.
Disney Cruise Line’s 10-year-long Blue Circle victory underscores the feasibility of harmonizing entertainment with environmental stewardship, a powerful message in our growing ecological consciousness. DCL’s continuing commitment to sustainable innovation is an inspiring journey, one we’ll continue to follow closely as they chart new waters in maritime sustainability.
