The fire, which commenced on a balcony, was swiftly handled by the diligent crew of P&O Cruises Australia. Confirming that the flames were quenched soon after detection, P&O thanked all onboard for cooperating during the unnerving episode, having effectively activated their emergency response procedures. The procedure included a full muster of guests and crew, ensuring everyone’s safety and accounting for every individual on board.

The cause of the fire was allegedly a cigarette. According to her account, an errant spark ignited a bed in a cabin. As the alarms and voice-over warnings pierced the night, it soon became apparent that this was not a drill but a dire emergency. Initially, she felt it was part of a dream due to the surreal circumstances. But the persistent alarm, and growing concern amongst fellow passengers, soon brought her back to reality.
