Spread the love

On Saturday May 27th from 5.10 – 8.30pm local music fans will be treated to a unique program inspired by artists including The Saints, Powderfinger, Gladys Moncrieff, Savage Garden, Joe Geia, Kate Miller-Heidke, and Harold Blair. A cross-genre love letter to Queensland, Lady Sings the Maroons showcases the art behind making a great song, and those who write them.

The concept is the brainchild of Opera Queensland’s CEO and Artistic Director, Patrick Nolan. The production is directed by Laura Hansford, and stars renowned vocalists and artistic collaborators, Jess Hitchcock, Irena Lysiuk and Marcus Corowa with Musical Director, Luke Volker on keys, who all trace their roots to regional Queensland.

Courtesy buses (gold coin donation to Quilpie Hospital Auxiliary) will be operating from Quilpie town area (including The Lake) to Baldy Top from 4.15pm until 5.00pm and following the show until approximately 9.30pm.  Those heading out to the event are encouraged to BYO chair, blanket, beverages and food.

Tickets are available at Lady Sings the Maroons – Quilpie Qld Tickets, Quilpie (Baldy Top), Quilpie | TryBooking Australia with tickets starting at just $5 for kids 13-17 and Adult tickets only $20.00.  Kids under 12 are free.

“We’re thrilled to be once again hosting Queensland Opera in Quilpie Shire.  Baldy Top is a beautiful outdoor venue and it’s exciting to be able to offer something of this calibre to our local community.  I know from feedback last time quite a few of the guys in attendance perhaps went along to appease partners, and then ended up having an awesome time.

Queensland Opera has created a show based on well know modern rock anthems that have broad appeal and help give a modern interpretation to Opera performance.  We’re sure everyone is going to enjoy Lady Sings the Maroons,” said Justin Hancock, CEO Quilpie Shire Council.

“It will be a great lead into us staging our very own performance with Mirusia who will perform solo at Baldy Top Lookout at the end of August.  She has performed with Andre Rieu as his star soprano since 2007 so to also be hosting another world calibre classical performance in our Outback Shire is extraordinary,” added Karen Grimm, Manager Tourism & Economic Development, Quilpie Shire Council.

Sharing the inspiration behind the production, Laura Hansford said music from Queensland had the power to transport an audience, “My Queensland, your Queensland and the next person’s Queensland are vastly different things, and that’s reflected in the music that’s come out of this state.”

Lady Sings the Maroons holds a mirror up to our extraordinary state with pride. On this tour, we are debuting a show that sings about the diversity of this state and its people as we try to capture ‘our Queensland’,” Ms. Hansford added.
