The latest data released by the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) reveals a massive upswing in air passenger travel to and from the United States. In March 2023, air passenger enplanements reached a staggering 19.687 million, marking an increase of 41.7% compared to the same month in 2022. This brings enplanements to 92.3% of the pre-pandemic March 2019 volume.
In another significant development, non-U.S. citizen air passenger arrivals to the United States from foreign countries also witnessed a substantial surge in March 2023. The numbers reached 4.285 million, showing a remarkable increase of 48.2% compared to March 2022. This figure represents 82.4% of the pre-pandemic March 2019 volume.
Overseas visitor arrivals to the United States continued to soar, with 2.158 million in March 2023. This marks the seventeenth consecutive month that overseas visitor arrivals have exceeded one million. March overseas visitor arrivals reached 74.8% of pre-pandemic March 2019 volume, up from 68.8% in February 2022.
The surge in air passenger travel to and from the United States is not limited to any region. According to the APIS/I-92 arrivals + departures data, the total air passenger travel (arrivals and departures) between the United States and other countries was led by Mexico (3.550 million), Canada (2.632 million), the United Kingdom (1.466 million), the Dominican Republic (917,000), and Germany (735,000).
Regarding international, regional air travel to and from the United States, Europe accounted for the most significant number of passengers, totalling 4.797 million, up 58.7% over March 2022 and down only 8.8% compared to March 2019. South/Central America/Caribbean followed with 5.208 million passengers, up 18.6% over March 2022 and down only 2.6% compared to March 2019. Asia accounted for 1.893 million passengers, up a remarkable 261.6% over March 2022 but still down 39.2% compared to March 2019.
In terms of the top U.S. ports serving international locations, New York (JFK) topped the list with 2.600 million, followed by Miami (MIA) with 2.009 million, Los Angeles (LAX) with 1.699 million, Newark (EWR) with 1.109 million, and Chicago (ORD) with 1.031 million. The top foreign ports serving U.S. locations were London Heathrow (LHR) with 1.311 million, Cancun (CUN) with 1.245 million, Toronto (YYZ) with 1.079 million, Mexico City (MEX) with 628,000, and Paris (CGD) with 588,000.
The surge in air passenger travel to and from the United States can be attributed to various factors, including the global vaccination drive, the easing of travel restrictions, and the reopening of international borders. As the world emerges from the pandemic, it is hoped that this trend will continue, contributing to the resurgence of the global tourism industry.
