Ten of this season’s newest shows in The Broadway Collection racked up a grand total of 63 nominations for the 76th annual Antoinette (Tony) Perry Awards ceremony. Set to air June 11, 2023, the Tony Awards recognize theatre professionals for their impressive achievements on stage. Some Like It Hot has earned a total of 13 nominations, the most of any show this year. Other nominees include & JulietShuckedNew York, New YorkKimberly AkimboSweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet StreetCamelot, and Life of Pi.

Set in Chicago during Prohibition, Some Like It Hot is a fast-paced adaptation of the classic MGM film following the story of two musicians forced to flee the Windy City under new identities after witnessing a mob hit. The show has received a whopping 13 nominations, including Best Original Score, Best Choreography, and the coveted Best Musical. Both Christian Borle and J. Harrison Ghee received Best Actor nominations.

& JulietShucked, and New York, New York, received nine nominations each, including Best Book, Best Orchestrations, and Best Musical. & Juliet flips the script on the greatest love story ever told, asking what would happen if Juliet evaded her tragic ending and gives her a second chance at life and love – on her own terms. The musical comedy Shucked follows an unlikely hero in the fictional Cob County, a relatively obscure but tight-knit community threatened with extinction. New York, New York is a glittering love letter to the greatest city in the world, set in 1946 after the war has ended and the city that never sleeps is beginning to rebuild itself.

Both Kimberly Akimbo and the revival of Sweeney Todd earned eight nominations each, with Victoria Clark and Annaleigh Ashford, respectively, being nominated for Best Actress. Kimberly Akimbo follows Kim, a teen with a disorder similar to progeria, which causes her to live in the body of a 72-year-old, but she is determined to find happiness in a world where time is not on her side. Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s landmark musical thriller, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street tells the tale of a vengeful barber out for blood and a resourceful pie shop owner who team up to serve up the most unsettling pies in London as they wreak havoc on Fleet Street.

The only play currently in The Broadway Collection, Life of Pi earned six nominations, including Best Direction, Best Sound Design, Best Lighting, and Best Costume Design. An inspiring tale of hope and endurance, Life of Pi follows a sixteen-year-old boy who has been left stranded on a lifeboat after a cargo ship sinks in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with an unlikely companion: a Royal Bengal tiger.

Lerner and Loewe’s classic tale of Camelot has received five nominations, including Best Featured Actor and Best Revival. Camelot tells the vibrant story about a quest for democracy, striving for justice, and the tragic struggle between passion and aspiration.

Additionally, the now-closed KPOP and Almost Famous received three nominations and one nomination, respectively. KPOP is nominated for Best Original Score, Best Choreography, and Best Costume Design. Almost Famous is nominated for Best Original Score.
