In a recent report, the Australian Hotels Association (WA) praised Western Australia’s tourism industry for its remarkable recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. The report showed that the state’s hotels and hospitality venues experienced a significant boost in revenue in 2022, thanks to a record visitor spend.
According to the CEO of AHA(WA), Bradley Woods, despite the impressive growth in tourism expenditure last year, there are still massive opportunities for growth ahead. These opportunities will materialize once airline capacity improves and traditional destination markets recover.
Woods said, “Following last year’s border reopening, WA’s tourism sector has rebounded rapidly, which is outstanding news for WA’s hoteliers, publicans, restaurateurs, and the tens of thousands of staff they employ.” In late 2019, WA was enjoying record levels of visitors from interstate and overseas, so it is reassuring to see that we are on a trajectory to return to these levels once airline capacity improves and airfare pricing stabilizes.
The CEO also highlighted the concerted efforts by State and Federal Governments, Tourism WA, and Tourism Australia to ensure the tourism, accommodation, and hospitality sectors bounced back strongly after prolonged border closures. The focus on securing a series of successive major events has delivered a significant boost for WA’s hotels, with Perth hotels regularly recording the highest occupancy levels in Australia in recent months.
The momentum built in the industry must be maintained. The ongoing recovery of WA’s tourism sector can play an important role in offsetting other economic challenges that may arise in the year ahead.
According to the report, growth opportunities exist, including investing in regional tourism, developing new tourism products, and implementing targeted marketing campaigns. With the proper support and investment, the tourism industry in WA can continue to grow and provide a significant boost to the state’s economy.
In conclusion, the record tourism spending in Western Australia has significantly boosted the state’s hotels and hospitality venues, marking a remarkable recovery for the industry from the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there is still more room for growth, and with the proper support and investment, the industry can continue to thrive and provide much-needed economic benefits to the state.
