With World Fisheries Day being celebrated by fishing communities today, Reflections Holiday Parks is encouraging people to fish sustainably whilst enjoying a day by the dam.

Celebrated every year on November 21stWorld Fisheries Day highlights the need for sustainable fishing practices and maintaining the world’s fisheries for future generations.

Regional Manager Inland Parks Leith Smith said fishing is a popular recreational activity across all Reflections Holiday Parks. “Reflections has 27 coastal parks and 9 country parks all in prime fishing spots and we encourage people to fish sustainably and respect the incredible environments of our fish populations,” Leith said.

“Our nine country parks are based on six dams, some of which are 2-3 times the size of Sydney Harbour. They are home to an abundance of Murray Cod, Yellowbelly, Silver Perch and Carp and we welcome hundreds of thousands of people each year to access our boat ramps, fish cleaning facilities and pontoons.

“Yellowbelly really jump in spring and summer, so we have great fishing right now at our inland parks.

“To support sustainable fish stocks, the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Fisheries release hundreds and thousands of native fish species, including Cod, Golden Perch and Yellowbelly fingerlings into our dams annually. DPI Fisheries also come to our country parks to hold fishing days for the kids to teach sustainable fishing and catch and release practices.

“This is important for our fish populations and supports fishing clubs who regularly hold ‘catch and release’ fishing competitions at our park dams.

“Our dams are such critical habitats for our freshwater fish and I encourage people to carry the message of World Fisheries Day with them as they throw their rods in the water and enjoy what is arguably one of the best sports available.

“Don’t forget to jump online and purchase a fishing licence before heading out to our dams for a day of fun, responsible fishing.”
