For the first time, the list has been sorted by trip type – eat, journey, connect, learn, and unwind – reflecting the demand for meaningful and experiential travel in 2023 and beyond.

BBQ Oyster huts – Itoshima
Announced this week and one of only 30 destinations selected globally, Fukuoka has been named in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel list for 2023 – the only destination in Japan to make a list. Beverage delights across the prefecture include sake (Fukuoka Prefecture is home to more than 70 sake breweries, bottling up over 1,000 varieties each year), shochu spirit, and some of the highest quality green tea produced in Japan from the Yame region.
Released annually, the Best in Travel list showcases trending and up-and-coming destinations to inspire travellers.
Following Japan’s entire border reopening in October 2022, there’s never been a better time for Aussie travellers to visit the trending destination of Fukuoka Prefecture.
Rich in culture, stunning natural beauty and cosmopolitan flare in Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture is located in the northern part of Japan’s Kyushu Island. Qantas Airways and Jetstar also offer direct flights to Japan for travellers to connect to Fukuoka via Tokyo. Travellers can fly to Fukuoka International Airport one-stop via Tokyo and Haneda with Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways.
