The City of Parramatta is on its way to becoming Sydney’s second CBD. Thanks to the Parramatta CBD Planning Proposal, the area could see an estimated 43,000 new jobs and 12,000 new dwellings over the next 40 years.

Numbers that could grow even further following the news that Greater Parramatta may see the construction of a central hub for dedicated fast rail lines connecting Sydney to Newcastle, Wollongong and Western Sydney. The Herald and Nine News obtained confidential cabinet documents that noted Parramatta would deliver “easy access” to employment centres and health and education precincts.

Alongside the Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2, which could see up to 29,000 new homes built along the proposed Stage 2 route over the next 15 years, the draft strategy will significantly improve the area.

“It also includes new trains and new or improved stations that, combined with radically faster travel times, will deliver a step-change in customer experiences.”

Travel Times Slashed

Current estimates put the construction of the high-speed rail line between Sydney and Newcastle in the tens of billions, which would reduce travel times between Parramatta and Newcastle from 2.5 hours to an hour. The NSW government has also estimated other proposed fast rail travel times, revealing up to a 75 per cent decrease in travel time.

For example, the current 4 hours and 7-minute journey from Sydney to Canberra would be only 3 hours with faster rail speeds of less than 200km/h. A high-speed rail in Australia with speeds of over 250km/h would slash travel times to just one hour

The state’s 20-Year Economic Vision for Regional NSW expects thousands of people to travel along rail corridors for work, education, tourism, and attend events or access services.

The NSW high-speed rail line is estimated to be the most extensive program undertaken by any state in Australia at $87.2 billion. With the Light Rail and the 24-kilometre Sydney Metro West project connecting Greater Parramatta and the Sydney CBD (estimated to see 420,00 people move into the corridor), Western Sydney will only get more and more popular with families and new home buyers.
