Located between two of Majorca’s mountain ranges, the Serra de Tramuntana and the Serra de Llevant, Es Pla is an untouched part of the island that reflects its past. Bell towers and traditional stone houses stand along fields of golden and green farmland, setting the scene for the island’s culture, tradition and history. The quiet streets are ideal for those seeking peace and tranquillity for their next trip, far from tourist resorts. The region is home to 16 towns and villages, which are known for their monasteries, as well as archaeological and architectural heritage. The oldest market on the island in Sineu is located here, where local traditional and artisanal products can be bought.
The towns of Algaida, Ariany, Costitx, Lloret de Vistalegre, Llubí, Maria de la Salut, Montuïri, Muro, Petra, Porreres, Sant Joan, Santa Eugènia, Santa Margalida, Sencelles, Sineu and Villagranca de Bonany are all in Es Pla. These villages are perfect for visitors who want to learn about the island’s culture and traditions by meeting the locals. Folklore runs through the region, which keeps generations-old traditions alive, including the Dance of the Cossiers, dating back to the 14th century and performed in several towns including Algaida and Montuïri.
The most ancient traces of Majorca can be found in Es Pla at the Son Fornés archaeological site. Here, visitors can learn about how the first inhabitants of the island lived. Old cisterns and wells bring us closer to the past, as well as the island’s iconic flour and water mills. Mill tours show tourists how they work and their significant role in Majorca’s agricultural heritage.
Sineu Market, held on Wednesday mornings and the oldest on the island, is not to be missed. Local artisanal products can be tried and bought as a souvenir of Majorca. As the region is in the centre of the island, Sineu was once home to royalty. Around this historical area, there is an abundance of cellars and old wineries converted into restaurants serving classic Majorcan cuisine. The eateries are usually in a traditional decor using tools such as cartwheels, large wine barrels with rustic fireplaces.
For the best panoramic views, sanctuaries, monasteries and hermitages Es Pla is a must-visit especially during the almond blossom from the end of January, where blankets of white flowers transform the landscape into “Majorcan snow”.
