The Majorca Championships, a new ATP 250 tournament in Majorca, is set to be held in Santa Ponça, Calvià, at the Majorca Country Club from 18 to 25 April 2022 in the lead-up to Wimbledon. The competition, offering €900,000 in prize money, was originally set to make its debut in 2020, but was postponed due to the pandemic. The 2021 event was the first ATP Tour tournament to be hosted in Majorca since 2002 and the first on a grass court in Spain. 2021’s matches saw the presence of the current number 1 in the world, Daniil Medvedev, Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem amongst other top-level players.
Nick Kyrgios, who has won the Men’s Doubles in this year’s Australian open and was a quarter finalist at Wimbledon in 2014, will compete in both singles and doubles. Talking about the tournament in a recent interview Kyrgios said “I really want to play in the Majorca Championships for the first time and on the grass courts of the Majorca Country Club. I’ve heard very good things about the club, the tournament and Majorca in general. I want to show my best tennis and I hope to see many tennis fans there throughout the week “.
The Spanish tennis star Pablo Carreño, currently number 19 in the world, has also announced that he will be taking part in the ATP250 tournament this year. The six-time ATP champion, expressed his joy at playing in Majorca again after just falling short at the final last year: “As a Spaniard I am proud to play in Majorca. I have wonderful memories of the past year and of the Majorca Country Club. I couldn’t find a better place to prepare for Wimbledon than here at home “.
