It is, therefore, no surprise that the island hosted the European Golf Tour for the Majorca Golf Open at the Santa Ponca golf club in October of last year.
With 23 courses Majorca is one of Europe’s destinations that features the most golf courses per square metre. This extensive offering has generated a significant increase in the number of visitors who travel to Majorca not only as a holiday destination but also as a sports destination.
More than 50 years of sporting tradition
Majorca has been home to high-quality courses for many years, starting in the 1960s when tourism started to boom on the island. Son de Vida, which opened in 1964, is only 6 kilometres from Palma and is renowned for being the oldest and therefore most traditional golf course in Majorca. In 50 years, it has hosted countless national competitions and on two occasions the European Tour in 1994 and 1990 with a victory by Severiano Ballesteros.
To the delight of golf lovers all over the world, many other courses have been curated by some of the best designers in the golfing world, including Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones and José María Olazábal.
Opened in 2006, Golf Maioris has all the facilities golfers need on its 6,347 metres, par-72 championship standard golf course. The venue features four lakes and two island greens in a classic Majorcan landscape, nestled between olive, pine and carob trees.
Commitment to sustainability
In addition to its environment, close to the sea and the mountains, commitment to sustainability is one feature that brings together all of the golf courses in Majorca. New improvements and installations have been implemented to adhere to requirements and quality standards in energy and water saving in their fields and facilities. In addition, these greens were planted with varieties of native plant life, with the objective of preserving the plants, trees and bushes that are unique to the island.
High-quality tourist resorts
Majorca features a good network of hotels and resorts fully equipped to accommodate and welcome golf players and their entourage with each golf course on the island offering high-quality accommodation and a good choice of restaurants in its vicinity.
