Today, Australia’s highest ever citizenship ceremony was conducted at Sydney’s ultimate viewpoint, the iconic Sydney Tower Eye.
The momentous Australian-first saw six new citizens from around the world welcomed into the Australian family in the form of an official citizenship ceremony conducted by the Australian Government’s Department of Home Affairs.
With the iconic Harbour Bridge and Opera House creating the ultimate Aussie backdrop during the official proceedings, the citizens from South Korea, South Africa, India, Brazil, Finland and the United Kingdom were delighted to have received their citizenship during a truly unique ceremony.
Every year, tens of thousands of people become Australian citizens at ceremonies hosted by the Department, local councils, and community organisations across the nation, but today was the first time a ceremony has been conducted on top of Sydney’s tallest building, Sydney Tower Eye.
“Today I had the privilege of presiding over the highest-ever citizenship ceremony on land in Australia, at the Sydney Tower Eye, where six new citizens from six different nationalities joined the Australian family. It was so special to be a part of such a unique event, 268 meters above sea level!” said Ms Sneha Chaterjee, NSW/ACT Regional Director for the Department of Home Affairs.
The citizenship ceremony is the final step in the process of becoming an Australian citizen and holds special significance for new citizens, their family and friends.
The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted face-to-face ceremonies over the last two years, so the in-person element of today’s ceremony added to the excitement of this unique event!
