Hong Kong expats are leaving due to Covid19 restrictions and now choose to live and work from tropical paradises like Phuket in some of the island’s most beautiful hotels such as The Pavilions Phuket.
As the covid pandemic is still raging, many people look for an escape way. The long-lasting lockdown in Hong Kong has caused many people to leave the city for the time being. Many expats who have been working from their apartments in Hong Kong, have now moved to a tropical place like Phuket. While they are still working on their laptop, they at least can experience a different lifestyle than they would be stuck in their apartment block in Hong Kong. In fact, according to a recent survey, Hong Kong has seen an 80% decrease in visitors since the start of the pandemic. Luckily for all of those displaced expats, another place offers many of the perks Hong Kong does: Phuket, Thailand.
Phuket offers them a lot of options to live and work from safe places. Many of the luxury hotels in Phuket offer long term stay options with up to 40% discount. They can also provide office space and high-speed internet that enables all foreign workers to continue working while enjoying their holiday at the same time. As one of the few places in Asia that have opened up to inbound and outbound travel many people are choosing to move to the island temporarily or long term and lease villas in some of the villas resorts that offer fully furnished villas within their resorts for rent.
Jen, a guest who recently checked into The Pavilions Phuket with her family from Hong Kong for 8 weeks, spoke to the team about the situation and how it was an ideal and easy fix to escape the increasing restrictions at home. “We saw that it was just becoming too difficult to live in Hong Kong during this increased time of restrictions due to the Covid19 outbreak. With our children being able to complete schooling online and both my husband and myself are able to work from home or remotely, it was a no-brainer in moving to Phuket for a few months as it calms down at home”
A recement member survey by the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong found that more than 40% of members recently said they were more likely to leave Hong Kong, citing international travel restrictions. It is making Phuket a very attractive temporary base for Hong Kong expats, moving to Phuket with its international airport, unrestricted borders and no quarantine rules.
Many people have chosen to live and work in exotic destinations such as Phuket with the ability to work remotely. The Pavilions Phuket has created a long-stay program that is ideal for those who need accommodations for 21 days, offering a variety of large suites and 3 & 4 bedroom villas with full kitchens. This package provides 40% off the room rate, one-way airport transfer, daily breakfast, 15% off F&B and 15% off laundry; additionally, Phuket is a tropical paradise with warm sandy beaches and crystal-clear water and since it’s not nearly as developed as many other locations, you can live like royalty for far less than you would be able to in Hong Kong.
As an expat-friendly destination, Phuket offers everything foreign businessmen and women expect from a tropical work/live retreat: serenity, security, infrastructure that is both exhaustive and comprehensive.
Thailand has managed the covid-19 situation well; life is safe and very normal. Phuket has always been a popular place for people working in Hong Kong to commute from, you will find many current or ex Hong Kong Expats living with their families in Phuket. International Hospitals are state of the art. An extensive range of International Schools is available from British and American systems to French, with no waiting lists!
Laure is another family looking to temporarily relocate out of Hong Kong with her family for a while. Her family were looking at Europe and Asia. With recent changes to school holidays and online education, they have decided to make the move and rent a three-bedroom villa for two months in Phuket and then go on to Europe for a month to see family. “We are not sure if we will then end up back in Hong Kong or return to Phuket for a while” explained Laure, a Hong Kong company executive.
