Shelter Brewing Co has collaborated with Highs and Lows for their latest Limited Release, the Shelter Table Sour. The beer is a modern, Australian take on a traditional table sour.
Shelter Head Brewer Jason Credaro said Shelter and Highs and Lows shared a vision about making a beer inspired by community and shared experiences.
“Traditionally a table sour is a low alcohol beer that families and workers would share around the lunch or dinner table after a hard day’s work,” he said.
“We wanted to bring that idea into modern Australia and produce a beer to be enjoyed at the beach, a picnic, holiday lunch with friends and family – all these events that are iconic parts of the Australian summer.
“Making something that was low on alcohol and super easy to drink and refreshing played right into all those themes.
“With sharing in mind, we’ve packaged the Table Sour in cans as well as in 750ml wine bottles that are just waiting to be cracked opened and fill tumblers around the table.
“Matt and the team at Highs and Lows shared that sentiment and were a big part in developing the product and the branding.”
Perth-based store Highs and Lows celebrates underground culture with a goal of creating meaningful projects that push the boundaries in taste and influence in their own fashion label as well as a roster of important curated brands.
Highs and Lows Director and Founder Matt Thomas said Shelter was the perfect partner to bring the idea to life.
“Shelter and Highs and Lows are both brands that believe in making things that last, believe that less is more,” Thomas said.
“There was also this idea we do a similar thing, but in different ways; bringing people together around the goods and services we provide.
“In the Table Sour we’ve made a product perfect for sharing around the dinner table.”
Credaro said the Table Sour is harmony of fruit, herb and spice flavours and aromas.
“The Highs and Lows crew came with the idea of using great local produce, specifically peaches and salt bush in the beer,” he said.
“The result is a wild combination of fruit and herb characters; it really is a complex beer and one with great structure and balance for a low alcohol beverage.
“At the same time, it’s really refreshing and accessible, and at 2.4 per cent ABV one you can enjoy for longer.”
Designed to be shared around a table, the Table Sour comes in cans as well as in 750ml bottles.
There could not be a collaboration with Highs and Lows without a line of merch to go with it. Highs and Lows have produced tee shirts, hats, bags and key rings celebrating the Table Sour that will be available to purchase online and in store at Highs and Lows and Shelter.
Shelter and Highs and Lows will be celebrating the Table Sour with a picnic-inspired Sunday session at Besk bar in West Leederville from 3pm on Sunday 23 January.
The Table Sour will be available from in good bars and bottle shops from 17 January. For a limited time only.

The Table Sour presents a harmony of fruit, herb and spice flavours and aromas. Local stone fruit shines amidst guava, cinnamon, rosemary and orange peel characters and an acidic kiwi tang. The local saltbush dry hop brings a herbaceous touch to this perfectly-balanced, well-bodied beer.
