Make a trip to explore the Canberra Wine District’s top drops part of your summer holiday road trip to the nation’s capital.
The tranquil rural countryside around the Canberra region is home to 140 vineyards with more than 40 cellar doors, and a diverse array of restaurants and providores, all within 35 minutes’ drive of the city centre. The vineyards are blessed with cool climate conditions across a diverse landscape of the region, which helps to shape the refined, unique qualities of the final product.
The Canberra District Wine Industry Association recently launched a new brand for the Canberra Wine District – ‘of Hearts and Vines’ is a way of sharing the story of the region’s cool climate wine district. It’s about connecting the relationship between the natural wonder of the vineyards and the raw passion of the growers and makers.
The Canberra Wine District has a reputation for producing award-winning Shiraz and Riesling along with Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Viognier, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Sangiovese.
A winery tour pairs perfectly with the diverse cultural exhibitions in Canberra this summer. These include the street machine culture of Summernats (6-9 January) to Ancient Greeks at the National Museum of Australia, a retrospective of Jeffrey Smart at the National Gallery of Australia and Australians & Hollywood at the National Film and Sound Archive (opens 21 January).
