Google receives over 3.5 billion searches worldwide per day, but what has been the most common Google search each year over the last decade? Well, the team at online language platform Preply have scoured through Google Trends data to reveal how Brits have been searching over the last ten years.

As a nation of sports lovers, six of the top searches of the past ten years were for pivotal sporting events. The Euros was the most popular search in 2021, 2016 and 2012, the Rugby World Cup in 2019, and the World Cup in 2014 and 2018.

2020 saw coronavirus as the most popular search, in a year that transformed the way we live and work. Hurricane Irma was the top phrase in 2017 – a category five hurricane that caused over 50 billion dollars worth of damage in the US.

The passing of well known, and much-loved people also resulted in two of the top searches, Cilla Black in 2015, and Paul Walker in 2013.

In 2011, the Royal Wedding was the most searched phrase, an event that saw over 17 million Brits tuning in to watch the televised event, live.

Daniele Saccardi of Preply said: “When times are uncertain, people look for answers and Google is one of the quickest ways to do that. Most of us have a smartphone, which has made it easier to use Google multiple times a day. If any incident or any emergency takes place, you can instantly get the news with Google’s help.

“We can see from our results that Brits share a common interest in some of the biggest events each year, whether that be sport, natural or even the pandemic.”
