Rising sea temperatures threaten to wipe out this living, breathing natural wonder. As of 2018, half of the coral that makes up the Great Barrier Reef was dead.
The unnaturally warm waters kill off the algae that the coral feeds on in a process called mass coral bleaching. According to experts, the entire reef could be wiped out by 2050 if drastic measures aren’t taken soon.
The full piece from Outforia reveals before and afters of world-renowned landscapes including the North Pole, the Everglades and the Alps; highlighting some harrowing facts around climate change.
Carl Borg, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Outforia has commented on the project:
“No matter where you live, the chances are you aren’t too far from a ‘nature spot’ you love – whether this be a local park or a national landmark. To think that this could be taken away from you in your lifetime is truly saddening.
It is heartbreaking that many of us simply sit back and watch these negative changes happening in our world, and whilst lockdown measures over the last year have mitigated some of the impacts, the changes are much more long-term. The big question is what move we make as a world to turn this around and regain our beauty spots again.
Hopefully these images and our efforts on this project will provide a reality check to many; whether this be enjoying outdoor beauty more often or making more serious changes to your lifestyle.”
