Spread the love

This Sunday 25 April 2021, Spirits of the Red Sand is breaking with tradition to host a unique ANZAC twilight event at the Beenleigh Historical Village from 2-7pm lest we forget the sacrifices our brave Australian, Aboriginal, Torres Strait, Kiwi and Maori men and women made and make for us, for country and for freedom.  Last year, we stood in our driveways, on balconies and in our living rooms to remember those who served and sacrificed for our freedom.  This year, Red Sands has planned a special twilight ANZAC tribute of remembrance like no other.   This free community event will be packed with emotion, surprises, interactions and traditions as we create a special sense of place, belonging, pride and unity.

Held within the Beenleigh Historical Village this Sunday 25 April 2021 from 2-7pm, this free family-friendly community event offers market stalls; food trucks; a fully licenced bar; a traditional hangi (pre-orders essential to avoid missing out) and a unique Twilight commemoration entertainment hosted by Chris Tamwoy, a proud Torres Strait Islander and finalist on Australia’s Got Talent.

Uncle Eddie Ruska, Cultural Elder of Yugambeh and Co-founder for Spirits of the Red Sand says “Events like this bring about a spirit of community, of love, of tolerance and acceptance for all, uniting us in our efforts to honour these brave men and women.”

Event Agenda includes:
  • 2pm gates open with market stalls; food trucks; Tin Cup Cafe and Bar
  • 4pm pre-purchased hangi plates available
  • 5pm Twilight entertainment includes:
    • Traditional welcome to country, including challenge, message stick smoking ceremony and corroboree performed by Nunukul Yuggera Aboriginal troupe
    • Walk through the corridor of time as Maori and Aboriginal performing groups unite together in chants, haka, war cries and welcomes
    • Stand in solidarity as the sun goes down to the Retreat Bugle Call joined by  Didgeridoo. Passing of the flame from one generation to another, the ANZAC ode read out as five flags are lowered, folded and passed to the next generation followed by a minute silence
    • Wreath laying by MP Bert VanManen and Opposition Leader, David Crisafulli
    • Be mesmerised as guests are confronted with a spine-tingling Haka especially choreographed for ANZAC by Te Tai Mauri performing group.
    • The amazing singing talent of Victoria Tamaki, as she pays tribute to the Andrews Sisters and Dame Vera Lynn
    • A special performance and MC role by Chris Tamwoy, proud Torres Strait Islander and finalist on Australia’s Got Talent
