The domestic routes and air fare battle continues, with it appears that Regional Express aka rex was able to announce the launch of its Sydney – Canberra services through an investment of $150 million from one of its private equity partner, PAG Asia aimed at helping rex develop new domestic routes.

With rex’ new Sydney-Canberra services scheduled to start very soon on 19 April and with fares apparently starting at a very low indeed, $99 one way and an initial frequencies of seven flights per day and up to ten depending on demand, it is imagined that QANTAS will not be very happy at this new competitor on its traditionally very high revenue and it appears, highly profitable Canberra-Sydney route domination.

rex Deputy Chairman, John Sharp who has accused Qantas of fare gouging said, “This will see the end of the monopoly on a route which had almost one million annual passengers pre-COVID, making this route large enough to sustain two competing carriers”, adding, “At a time when many small businesses and households are still struggling to make ends meet, our fares will make a world of difference to the community that routinely sees one-way fares close to $1,000 for this short sector.”
