“Hospitality and tourism” is one of three Australian industry sectors to have recorded the strongest growth in job demand over the past year, according to an extraordinary finding released today.

Hospitality and accommodation seem to be where the growth is, with those in demand including chefs and cooks, waiters, bar and beverage staff, kitchen and sandwich hands, front office and guest services – and management. Travel agency staff are not mentioned, which is unsurprising, given current travel conditions.

Here are the top three industries making a positive contribution to the growth of job ads, with growth (comparing January 2020 to January 2021) in brackets:

  • Trades and Services (+40.9%)
  • Manufacturing, Transport and Logistics (+31%)
  • Hospitality and Tourism (+30.5%)

“All three of these industries are showing extremely strong growth comparing January 2020 to January 2021,” the SEEK employment report says.

Below is an example of the types of roles most in demand within the top three sectors for January 2021:

  • Trades and Services. Roles in automotive trades, labourers, electricians, welders and boiler makers, technicians, carpentry and cabinetmaking, and hair and beauty services.
  • Manufacturing, Transport and Logistics. Roles in warehousing, storage and distribution, road transport, assembly and process work, machine operators, couriers, drivers and postal services.
  • Hospitality and Tourism. Roles for chefs/cooks, waiting staff, bar and beverage staff, management, kitchen and sandwich hands and front office and guest services.

STATE OF THE NATION: 

  • SEEK job ads were up 6.5% year-on-year (y/y). This is the third consecutive month of y/y job ad growth.
  • The top three industries contributing to y/y growth were Trades & Services, Manufacturing, Transport & Logistics, and Hospitality & Tourism.
  • SEEK job ads were up by 4% month-on-month (m/m).
  • SEEK Business received a record number of visits and enquiries to buy a business.

STATE OF THE STATES: 

  • The top three states that contributed the most to y/y job ad growth were Western Australia, Queensland, and Victoria.
  • All states and territories saw a m/m increase in job ads, except Tasmania which had a small drop of 0.7%
  • Victoria joins Tasmania, Northern Territory, Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland as states and territories with higher y/y job ad volume.

Kendra Banks, managing director of SEEK ANZ, commented: “In a very encouraging start to the year, we are continuing to see positive job ad growth nationally.

“Traditionally, we would see a drop in new job ad growth throughout December, and into the start of January. Pleasingly, in 2021, businesses have been looking to hire from the very first week of the year.

“New job ads posted on SEEK grew 4% month-on-month and looking at the year-on-year comparison, we have now seen December 2020 and January 2021 increase by 5% and 6.5% respectively. This is the third consecutive month of year-on-year increases.”

The SEEK Employment Report aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the Australian employment marketplace. The report includes the SEEK Employment Index (SEI), an aggregate indicator to measure the interaction between labour market supply and labour market demand. It also includes the SEEK New Job Ad Index which measures only new job ads posted within the reported month to provide a clean measure of demand for labour across all classifications.

The report describes SEEK as a diverse group of companies, including online employment, educational, commercial and volunteer businesses.
