Spread the love

When I watch The Project video of the laid off QANTAS A380 pilots [to see it CLICK HERE], while it does upset me, I really admire their grit and determination to get working by talking a job driving buses in Sydney.

Unfortunately, I think it is a great pity that their approach does not appear to have rubbed off on some others and in particular in travel and tourism, with my experience trying to find someone suitable with industry experience and contacts to take on the role of sales manager for eGlobal Travel Media, initially in Queensland, having been rather different and to see the advertisement CLICK HERE.

Now to be fair we have had a few really good candidates and I thank them, and we are speaking with them, but the number of candidates that have said that they are only applying to comply with Jobseeker or that they are on Jobkeeper, is frightening.

For employers this is a real timewaster, but also it means that that the applicants appear to be quite happy to simply comply with conditions for receiving government funds rather than get a job.

I wonder what they think will happen when Jobkeeper and Jobseeker come to an end and that a mass of new jobs will miraculously appear?

I have also heard every reason you can imagine for not progressing to be considered for the role, including, “No thank, you, I am waiting for something more senior”,  “I am looking at moving out of travel to another sector”, “I am looking for something with remuneration in line with my seniority and my previous roles”, “I am a looking for a guaranteed salary not a commission and performance based job”, “I want job with a salary not commission”, and many more!

Now I understand that in an ideal world when jobs were relatively plentiful, the above might have been reasonable excuses, but in a jobs marketplace that has been absolutely decimated, with travel and tourism in particular massively impacted and the industry future not looking at all bright, I would have thought Aussies would be rather less picky and more determine to get a job, imperfect for them though it may be.

In any case, very disappointed though I am with some candidates’ approaches, but very happy with others and well done to them, if you know someone that might be interested please send them this article or this link CLICK HERE.
