Sybille de Margerie wanted to instil multiple influences into a hotel where cosmopolitan people meet, where cultures come together and East meets with West, and so brought French artists together with international artists to produce one-off pieces for the hotel. These artists are joined by the craftsmen and women who represent unique French savoir-faire.
“Air”, sculpture by famous Parisian sculptor Nathalie Decoster for Mandarin Oriental, Paris, is suspended in the lobby; a symbol of fragile liberty, hanging from a thread. Her visual language is anchored in a vision of time and our fragile human lives. Unique creations of Marcello Lo Giudice can also be seen in the lobby of Mandarin Oriental, Paris. The works of this artist are sought after by many collectors worldwide.
Thierry Bisch, famous animal portraitist, has painted a magnificent canvas for the Penthouse Mandarin Suite, and a quadriptych on Diasec for the Oriental Penthouse Suite. An exceptional wall-hung work by sculptor Gérard Roveri decorates the magnificent Penthouse Mandarin Suite. Several of Jean-Baptiste Huynh’s photographs are hung on the walls of both Penthouse Mandarin Suite and Oriental Penthouse Suite, and portraits of internationally acclaimed Ali Mahdavi can be found in the suites and corridors of the property.
Mandarin Oriental, Milan
Mandarin Oriental, Milan prides itself on its two signature suites, Fornasetti Suite and Premier Suite, inspired by legendary Milanese designers Piero Fornasetti and Giò Ponti and featuring some original furniture pieces by other famous Italian designers.
The signature Fornasetti Suite is furnished with original Fornasetti pieces. It is adorned with decoratively framed mirrors on the green walls of the lounge, and the ‘Riflesso’ wallpaper-covered central pillar holds the attention for that room. Other features include a writing desk from the ‘Farfalle’ collection in the bedroom and an ‘Architettura’ console table in the corridor. Another highlight of the suite is the original Fornasetti hand-made trumeau which represents the Pinacoteca di Brera, one of the most important Milanese museums located within walking distance from the hotel.
A tribute to Milanese rationalism and the minimalist style of Gio Ponti, who has inspired many artists since the 1950s, the Premier Suite is decorated in black walnut. Its striking features include Mangiarotti’s ‘Eros’ marble table illuminated by an iconic ‘2097-30/50’’ Sarfatti chandelier. There is also an original console table by Gio Ponti and Citterio’s ‘Simpliciter’ sofa. The bedroom is furnished with navy blue textiles that harmonize seamlessly with the upholstered Catilina armchair by Luigi Caccia Dominioni.
Mandarin Oriental, New York
The signature Suite 5000 on the 50th floor of Mandarin Oriental, New York features a constantly changing exhibition of contemporary New York and the USA based artists and sculptors. The exposition is constantly renewed because every piece of is available for purchase. Since its opening in 2013 the suite has exhibited works of Shelter Serra, Ray Geary and Forrest Myers, as well as the work “Space Donut” by Kenny Scharf.
Mandarin Oriental, Taipei
Housing more than 1,700 art pieces, Mandarin Oriental, Taipei features works from renowned artists, stunning antiques, and sculpture designed by the award-winning artists, such as Lee Jae-Hyo, Kim Chan, and Zhu Wei, the world’s most renowned contemporary Chinese ink painter.
The hotel welcomes guests in grandeur and luxury with a magnificent 1,400-kg chandelier in the Lobby Entrance. With a diameter of 4 meters and height of over 3.9 meters, this spectacular monumental piece exclusively designed by a Czech designer Tafana Dvorakova that used a combination of 50,000 pieces of crystal beads and light amber crystal drops took over nine months to make from initial designs to installation. And the magnificent Presidential Suite also features astonishing chandelier by Ran Hwang.
Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai
Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai features the largest art collection of all Mandarin Oriental properties in the Far East – a total of 4,000 modern art pieces that are displayed throughout the property public areas and guestrooms. Two-thirds of the artworks are indigenous creations of contemporary Chinese artists.
Master Lai De Quan, a famous Chinese ceramist created 43 porcelain artworks of series “Scenes of Jiangnan”, especially for Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai. The collection of panels combines Western abstract designs and Oriental symbolism and is exhibited throughout guestroom corridors and in Presidential Suite.
Other significant art pieces include “Figure”, a gilded sculpture by famous Shen Lieyi that welcomes guests at the entrance of the Chinese Yong Yi Ting restaurant, and a mosaic by Miao Tong depicting forest landscape that spreads across the walls of the hotel lobby.
Mandarin Oriental Wangfujing, Beijing
Mandarin Oriental Wangfujing, Beijing exhibits several pieces that are worthy of attention.
First, the signature fan that is hanged in the lobby of the hotel is a true piece of art by itself, designed by the Oscar winning art director and “New Orientalism” visual artist pioneer, Tim Yip. The striking overhead fish lamp “Three Fish” hangs in the lobby, designed by world-renowned Frank Gehry, featuring red, pink and peach-colored fish which appear to swim, as if chasing each other. “Mrs Wen in Her Green Jacket”, which hangs in the lift lobby, is an intriguing study of a Qing Dynasty court lady by Paris-based artist Jia Juan Li. The atmospheric large-scale oil painting, “The Gathering” by artist Zhou Biao, captures the mood of the hotel western restaurant Mandarin Grill + Bar.
