Royal Brunei airlines has gained a prestigious Five Star accolade, the highest level in its tier, in the Major Airline category at the 2020 APEX Official Airlines Ratings ceremony in Los Angeles.

The APEX rating program is based solely on certified passenger feedback and insights.  APEX is a non-profit membership trade association dedicated to improving the entire airline passenger experience.

“RB is delighted and honoured to receive this prestigious award and be part of an elite group of five-star airlines in the world,” Royal Brunei chief executive, Karam Chand, commented when the award was made on Monday.

“The team’s focus on delivering excellent guest experience everyday with the warm Bruneian hospitality is recognised by our guests and reflected in multiple awards the national airline has recently received.

“Excellent service and doing little things well is part of our service strategy and a point of differentiation. The award underscores RB’s goal to be a world-class boutique airline and is a testament to our team’s hard work to deliver the signature RB service both in the air and on the ground” he said.

“We thank our guests for their continuous support and recognition of the improvements we have made to our products and services.”

Chand extended his heartfelt thanks “to the entire Team RB for your work that has allowed us to reach the APEX Five Star Rating”.

APEX chief executive, Dr Joe Leader, said that Royal Brunei Airlines’ passenger-voted rise to an APEX 2020 Five Star Major Airline was based on 1.4 million verified flight votes captured across nearly 600 airlines worldwide.

Captain Saiful Bahrin Awg Bahar, Royal Brunei Airlines chief operations officer, receives the award on behalf of the company from APEX representatives.

“Royal Brunei Airlines advanced in the ratings this year not only because of its product improvements, but because of its service.  As Royal Brunei celebrates 45 years this fall, APEX congratulates Royal Brunei Airlines as one of the single digit percentage of airlines worldwide that reach APEX Five Star status.”

The APEX Official Airline Ratings is based on neutral, third-party passenger feedback and insights gathered through APEX’s partnership with the travel-organising app TripIt from Concur. Using a five-star scale, more than one million flights were rated by passengers across nearly 600 airlines from around the world between 1 July 2018 and 30 June 2019.

On the same screen, passengers were given the opportunity to provide anonymous ratings in five subcategories: seat comfort, cabin service, food and beverage, entertainment, and Wi-Fi. The single screen rating allows airline passengers to easily rate their flight in less than 15 seconds.

RB first received the APEX Four Star Major Airline award in 2017, and over the period, the national flag carrier has embarked on a strategic growth journey where it introduced more direct flights to a number of key destinations. RB now has operates to 25 international destinations from its hub at Brunei International Airport and soon to 32 cities including newly introduced RB Link cities within the island of Borneo.

Royal Brunei currently operates a fleet of fourteen aircraft comprising of five Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft together with seven Airbus A320NEO aircraft and two Airbus A320 CEO Aircraft. RB now operates one of the youngest fleet in the world with an average fleet age of two years.

In 2018, RB received the APEX Official Airline Ratings Four-Star Award and as winners of TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Economy Class – Asia and Travellers’ Choice Regional Airlines – Asia.

In 2019, RB moved up twelve places to be at number 66 in the top 100 airlines in the world, awarded the Skytrax Four Star Airline Rating and rated a 2020 APEX Five Star Major Airline.
