A national survey of Australian pet owners has found that around a quarter (24%) haven’t holidayed for five years or more because they don’t want to leave their fur babies.

Conducted by Australia’s leading pet sitting platform PetCloud, the survey also found that older Australians were more tied to their four-legged friends with 40 per cent of pet owners aged over 55 saying they hadn’t taken a holiday in more than a decade.

Millennial pet owners were least likely to let pets get in the way of a ‘vacay’ with 74 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds and 64 per cent of 25 to 34-year-olds holidaying every year.

PetCloud CEO Deb Morrison said this could be because younger Australians were tapped into the sharing economy and more aware of the services available to them and their pets.

“Like Airbnb for pets, PetCloud is a travel enabler – it was created so our nation of travellers and animal-lovers never had to sacrifice one for the other, but this survey has found that pet ownership is preventing some Australians from travelling. So we’re reminding Aussies that they can have the best of both worlds with a little help from a pet sitter,” Ms Morrison said.

“We know it can be hard leaving a pet behind and trusting someone else to care for a fur baby which is why PetCloud partnered with a branch of the RSPCA and all of our sitters undergo police checks and are covered by insurance. Whether it’s a business trip or a well-deserved holiday, pet owners can access thousands of trusted animal lovers across Australia who can pet sit, house sit, walk the dog, make a house call, offer doggy day care, and even take a pet to the vet or a grooming appointment. There’s no reason why pet owners and their fur babies can’t both enjoy holiday times.”
