Music Legends Remembered in Memphis

When it comes to music, there’s simply no place like Memphis. A city where music legends have made history for decades, including the great Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, Memphis continues to be an inspiration for artists around the world, and the city continues to pay its respects to the legends that have graced the city limits.

For music lovers and historians alike, the recent unveiling of a Johnny Cash sculpture in the Cooper-Young neighbourhood provides yet another reason to visit the city. Standing at the site of his first professional performance, the new statue sees Cash standing tall with guitar in hand, outside the Galloway House, where he played his first paid gig. Serving as a new Memphis music landmark in one of the city’s most vibrant live music districts, the statue was unveiled by Memphis Tourism President and CEO Kevin Kane and sculptor Mike McCarthy last week.

“Cooper Young district has a hero, and he’s the godfather of Americana music, Johnny Cash,” said Mike McCarthy, sculptor and one of the founders of the Cash project.

Celebrating another hero of the music world, the annual Elvis Week will take place in Memphis from 9 – 17 August. This week long celebration will see an influx of Elvis fans from around the world gather in his home town to pay tribute to the memory of the King of Rock ’n’ Roll. The great southern city will come together for a celebration of music, movies and the legacy of the King himself. Celebrations also include traditional annual events such as the Elvis Fan Club Presidents Event, Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest, and an Elvis candlelight vigil.
