The world’s most remote music festival, the Birdsville Big Red Bash has sold out today with record numbers just four days ahead of the event’s kick-off in Outback Queensland’s Simpson Desert.
More than 9,000 festival goers will attend the 2019 Big Red Bash – marking the largest incarnation of the event since its founding in 2014.
Record ticket sales for the 2019 Big Red Bash come on the back of one of the biggest billings in the event’s history – and further solidify the festival as Australia’s biggest Outback event. Proudly supported by the Queensland Government via Tourism and Events Queensland, the bucket list music experience has grown exponentially in recent years to generate around $11 million in annual revenue for Outback Queensland.
Running from July 16-18, 2019, this year’s Big Red Bash is headlined Oz Rock legends Midnight Oil, who are set to give a once-in-a-generation performance against the striking backdrop of the spectacular 40-metre-high Big Red sand dune.
The Oils will be joined by a host of all-time Australian music greats including Kasey Chambers, The Living End, Busby Marou, Richard Clapton, 1927, Wendy Matthews, Neil Murray and many more.
Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said a sold out Birdsville Big Red Bash will be a great boost for jobs in the tourism sector in the region.
“The 2019 Birdsville Big Red Bash could well be the best one yet. Outback Queensland is getting ready to host thousands of visitors who are making the journey to the western edge of the state to take part in this iconic event, hosted in a truly unique landscape,” Ms Jones said.
“The fact this event has sold out is a testament to the hard work of the event organisers and the local community. The Queensland Government is proud to support this event via Tourism and Events Queensland because it does a great job of drawing visitors to the state, showcasing Outback Queensland and providing real economic benefit for the people in this region.”
Not just a dustbowl music festival, the all-ages and dog-friendly event offers up a uniquely Australian destination adventure for families, grey nomads, camping enthusiasts and intrepid travelers domestically and abroad.
The festival also offers up a jam-packed program of outback activities – from comedy and outdoor film screenings, to scenic helicopter flights, dune surfing, beach volleyball, camel rides and charity initiatives for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
“This year’s Big Red Bash is set to be the biggest we’ve had! We are fortunate enough to have our biggest ever music lineup in 2019 – and so it makes sense that we’ve also notched our biggest ever ticket sales,” said Big Red Bash Founder and Organiser, Greg Donovan.
“With 2019 being declared the ‘Year of Outback Tourism’ by the Queensland Government, it’s great to see more and more people embracing the opportunity to break city limits and explore this remote and beautiful part of Outback Australia. And with desert flowers blooming following rains earlier in the year, and the subsequent filling of Lake Eyre and the migration of thousands of pelicans this has brought with it, there’s never been a better time for an outback odyssey” Donovan added.
The Big Red Bash can be accessed via road vehicles, scheduled and charter flights, and bus tours. The event does not sell alcohol, but ticket-holders are permitted to bring their own food and alcohol on to the event site. In addition, there will be a range of food vendors selling both hot and cold food and beverages at the event.
The Big Red Bash also has dog-friendly camping and concert areas and children aged 11-and-under are also able to attend the event for free.
